Brandt’s Woodwind Quintet List – L

In concert with recent scholarship on women composers, this list now highlights their names with a different-colored background.

Laaksonen, Kimmo (1972- )

Wind Quintet (2013)

Helsinki: Music Finland https://core.musicfinland.fi/

Duration: 5:40.

La, Jin-Wong

Woodwind Quintet – from the collection Composition Yonsei 1982

Seoul: College of Music, Yonsei University, 1983

From a collection of compositions by faculty and students of Yonsei University created in 1983. This was the only woodwind quintet included.

La Barbara, Joan (1947- )

Helga’s Lied (1986) for female voice, wind quintet and string quintet

Commissioned and premiered (October 10, 1988 in Aarhus, Denmark) by the Esbjerg Ensemble and Joan La Barbara. (She also later created a version of this work for voice, cello and electronics.) Joan La Barbara is the professional name of Joan Linda Lotz La Barbara Subotnik. See also: http://www.joanlabarbara.com/

Before programming this work, you should know that La Barbara, in addition to being a composer, is an innovator at avant-garde vocal techniques. Some of her signature techniques include multiphonics, circular singing, ululation and glottal clicks. Helga’s Lied was written for herself. If your vocalist isn’t comfortable learning and performing those techniques, there’s probably no sense of even considering this score. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Labate, Bruno (1883-1968)

Intermezzo No. 2 for woodwind quartet (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon) and optional horn.

New York, Mills Music 1954

Bruno Labate was a noted oboist and principal oboist of the New York Philharmonic from 1920-1943. Most of his compositions were for accompanied winds. Do not confuse this Bruno Labate with the NASCAR driver of the same name. (Not that you were likely to.) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Intermezzo and Scherzino in A for flute, oboe, 2 clarinets and bassoon

C. F. Peters

This work probably incorporates the Intermezzo listed by itself, below.

Labey, (Jean) Marcel (1875-1968)

Suite Champêtre, Op. 24 (1922) pour quintette à vent

Paris: Max Eschig ? (out of print?)

Duration: 21:00. Movements: Envoi; Divertissement; Paysage; Rondeau. First performed by members of the Société d’instruments à vent Louis Fleury* in Paris, on April 30, 1923 at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées. A version for orchestra is numbered Op. 34. See also: http://www.musimem.com/labey.htm (in French). About the same time he prepared his quintet, Labey also arranged the Suite Champêtre for orchestra.

* The Société d’instruments à vent Louis Fleury is quite possibly an alternate name for the Société Moderne d’Instruments à Vent (SMIV) which was founded in 1895 by Georges Barrère. When Barrère went to New York in 1905, flutist Louis Fleury took over the directorship and led the group until 1926.

Marcel Labey was born to a family of magistrates and received his own doctorate in law in 1898 before he began serious study in music. He became a protegée of Vincent d’Indy. His studies and career were interrupted by World War I, where he served and was wounded twice. After the war, he taught piano and was one of the under-directors of the Schola Cantorum, and later was co-founder and director of the Ecole César Franck from 1935-1962. He was also secretary of France’s Société nationale de musique, his legal background probably helping him as an administrator. Labey was a notable conductor in Paris and elsewhere in the country. As a composer he was highly influenced by d’Indy and Franck and, although well-aware of many of the changes of French music in the 20th century, appears not to have been heavily influenced by them compositionally. The Suite Champêtre was his only woodwind quintet in a composition career that concentrated on music for piano, organ, symphonies and a single opera. His wife, Charlotte Sohy (1887-1955), a student of d’Indy, was also a noted composer, but not for wind chamber music.

Breathless (2003)

New York: Red Poppy Music, www.redpoppymusic.com, distributor: G. Schirmer

Duration: 13:00. See also: https://davidlangmusic.com/

David Lang provides us with his own program notes:
I was a horn player in high school and in college. Not a good horn player. I was mostly a trombonist but I switched to horn after breaking my arm playing sports and I stuck with it for a while after my arm healed. I remember being terrified playing in wind quintets – I would sit and wait for all the fluffy flute and oboe parts to build and then I would have to enter with something heroic, which I invariably wrecked. Mostly as a kind of rationalization I started thinking that there was a democracy problem in quintets, that my part was harder than the other parts, and that the musical responsibilities were not spread equally though the ensemble. When I got the commission from the Royal Philharmonic Society to write a piece for the excellent Galliard Ensemble all these memories and perceived injustices came back to me, and I vowed to make a more democratic quintet. I devised a plan for the piece that would require all the instruments to play all the time, and always play the same thing, each contributing a continuous flow of almost identical bits of information to a larger almost unison whole. For some strange, completely unmusical reason I am proud that each instrument plays just about the same number of notes. When I wrote it I was sure that my piece had a relationship to the amazing film of the same name by Jean-Luc Godard, but for the life of me I now don’t remember what that was.

Variaties op een akkoord for Reciter and Wind Quintet (1979)

One online encyclopedia lists this as for recorder and wind quintet, but another source lists this as for “recitant” and wind quintet, so a reciter or dramatic reader seems more likely. In yet another catalog, “reciter” and “recorder” might both be abbreviated as “rec”, which might be the source of the confusion.

From the recording on the composer’s website, the piece makes use of various modern tonal techniques, including multiphonics (fingerings supplied in the score), microtonal shakes, with quick crescendos and decrescendos. Actual melodies are rationed carefully between the parts. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Larsson, Lars-Erik (1908-1986)

Quattro Tempi, Divertimento for Blaskvintett, Op. 55 (1968)

Stockholm: C. Gehrmans Musikforlag, 1969

Duration: 13:00. Movements: Tranquillo; Agitato; Sostenuto–Giocoso.

All four movements, recorded by the Stockholm Quintet for Naxos, are currently on YouTube but in three separate sound files, two of them partially mis-labeled. For a work written in the politically and musically turbulent 1960s, Quattro Tempi is defiantly tonal. The opening Tranquillo section could just as easily been titled “Pastorale”, beginning with musical bird calls initiated in the flute and echoed in the other woodwinds, while the horn calmly offers a foundation below all the activity. If you still weren’t sure of the bird allusions earlier, the movement clearly ends with flutey cuckoos. The second YouTube video has the Agitato section (although the title of the file also includes the “Sostenuto” which is actually in the third sound file.) The Agitato is an almost manic display of technique that shows off all the instruments virtuosically, passing off rhythmic sections between the instruments quickly. Although the third sound file on YouTube is marked Giocoso, it begins with the solemn and sad Sostenuto section (which, to my ear, echoes some slow sections of the Hindemith quintet) and seques into the Agitato finale (which, in places, reminds me of chorale sections of Nielsen’s Quintet finale). In this work, Larsson’s harmonic and melodic language is resolutely conservative. His work absorbs elements of French virtuosic wind technique mixed with German and Scandinavian musical traditions, too, but the mix surprisingly results in a mature, personal style and a very attractive work. If your quintet (or your audience) wants or needs a break from the more avant-garde trends of the twentieth century, Larsson’s quintet offers a musically rewarding and audience-pleasing composition. Recommended. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Divertimento No. 2, Op. 15 (1935) for woodwind quintet and string orchestra

Wien: Universal Edition, 1935

Duration: 12:00. Movements: I. Allegro con spirito; II. Adagio; III. Presto. Duration: 11:30. The score is available for purchase from Musikproduktion Hoeflich, at https://repertoire-explorer.musikmph.de/en/product/larsson-lars-erik-2/

A recording by the Louisville Orchestra of all three movements is on YouTube although each movement in a different file. (I had to hunt each one down.) This work seems to straddle the line between a concertante work and a unified ensemble. The wind quintet is frequently featured soloistically and often set apart from the strings, but the two work together as an ensemble as well. The work is quite pleasantly tonal and quasi-neoclassical with a considerable amount of contrapuntal activity. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Larsson, Martin Q.(1968- )

Basho Winds (2003) for double woodwind quintet

Available from the composer, http://www.martinq.com/

For flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, clarinet in A, bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, 2 horns.

According to the composer, “The Basho Trilogy is inspired from texts by Matsuo Basho who lived in Japan during the 17th century and who is regarded as the master of haiku (or hokku), an epigrammatic Japanese verse form in 17 syllables. In the piece there are no written dynamics and very few phrase marks. It is the composer’s wish that the ensemble on its own works these parameters out, according to their own likings. The movements may be performed separately or together.”

Movements:
Basho 1 (Stand still! A dagger-thrust against the cliffs. Voices of the Cicadas) (3 min.)
Basho 2 (On a withered branch. A crow has stopped. Twilight in autumn) (3 min.)
Den hemlighetsfulla mumien (The mysterious mummy) (6 min.)

Lash, Hannah(1981- )

Leander and Hero (2015)

Mainz: B. Schott Sohne, https://en.schott-music.com/ parts are rental

Flute doubles piccolo, oboe doubles English horn, clarinet doubles on E clarinet. Lash’s website (if I decipher the abbreviations correctly) suggests that the players also double on soprano recorder, but the publisher’s website mentions nothing about this. Bassoonist needs a low A extension, briefly. 9 movements: I Prelude: The Cliffs; II Courting Dance: Slow and Ancient; III Flocking; IV First Storm; V Hero and Leander; VI Interlude: away from the rocks; VII The Storm; Leander Does Not Return to the Nest; VIII Hero Finds Leander’s Body and Will Not Leave His Side; IX Postlude: The Cliffs. Duration: 35:00.The work was commissioned by the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. It was premiered and recorded by the City of Tomorrow quintet. Movements 1, 4 and 7 are on YouTube, starting with https://youtu.be/QUknI9W8cmk

The movement titles are explained by Hannah Lash:
Leander and Hero takes as its point of departure the story of Leander and Hero’s tragic love. But in my version, Leander and Hero are cliffbirds who mate for life. Hero sits on eggs in the nest on the rocks while Leander fishes for food. Leander is killed in a violent storm at sea and does not return. Hero waits for him but when he does not come she leaves her nest to go look for him. She finds his body washed up by the waves. Like all birds who mate for life, she sits by his body, unwilling to leave his side even in death.

Lau, Kevin

Living Miniatures (2015) for woodwind quintet

Oboe doubles English horn; clarinet doubles bass clarinet. Duration: 12:00. Movements: I. Spring Gate; II. Oakenshield; III. Road to Aberdeen. You can listen to the Blythewood Quintet”s recording on SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/blythwoodwinds/sets/living-miniatures-by-kevin-lau .

According to the composer: “Living Miniatures was loosely inspired by my experiences residing in various communities—urban, suburban, and rural. These broad categories represent different solutions to the problem of social cohesion; each have their own emergent values, beneficial and deficient in differing ways. The three short movements that comprise Living Miniatures can be thought of caricatures of a sort: whimsical in tone for the most part, but occasionally biting. The work is scored for wind quintet, itself a microcosm of the challenges (lack of homogeneity) and advantages (strength in diversity) of any society.’

Octet (1967) for woodwind quintet, bass clarinet, trumpet and trombone.

New York: Associated Music Publishers, 1967

Duration: 8:50. The work consists of two sets of variations. Variation I starts with a four measure “theme” of chords and 11 short variations. It divides the ensemble into three groups, based on timbre. Variation II (the second set of variations) divides the ensemble basically into two groups, based on high and low register instruments. This description, however, doesn’t prepare the listener for the harsh aleatoric sound of the work. Also see Cohn for a description. A recording by the UCLA Wind Ensemble of Variations I is on YouTube: https://youtu.be/mJ3f04IUjqQ Lazarof also wrote an Octet for strings, which also shows up, insistently, in a Google search.

Cotten Fields (arr. Thomas Hundemer)

Available from the arranger: 225 Linden, Shreveport, LA 71104

Cute arrangement of this popular tune by turn of the century (the next-to-last turn of the century) folk singer, guitarist and composer. Used by our quintet in many school concerts in north Louisiana. He made many recordings for the Library of Congress of several of his hits. Leadbelly eventually left the South and even made it to New York City where he rubbed shoulders with high society. Since Leadbelly was once a Shreveport (Louisiana) native, the business district has a statue of him in front of the downtown library. There’s also a mural dedicated to him in Texarkana, Texas, across the street from the Perot Theatre (if I remember correctly). This is particularly notable since Leadbelly had been imprisoned for murder in both states, and eventually pardoned in both by their respective governors. His biographies online and off make for great reading. [ Andrew Brandt ]

A popular French Romantic quintet, the Suite is fairly easy – a good training piece for medium to advanced student ensembles and often performed by pro ensembles as well. It is a good choice for a light, mostly cheerful, well-crafted, tuneful work that displays the ensemble well. If you are not already familiar with the work, there are a few interpretations available on YouTube, including a good one by the Toronto Woodwind Quintet. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Leibowitz, René (1913-1972)

Quintet, Op. 11 (1944)

Hillsdale, New York: Boelke-Bomart Publications, 1958

see also Universal Editions

New York: Schott, 2015 (Project Schott New York Composer Edition)

Born in Warsaw, Leibowitz spent most of his life in Paris, where he became an expert in the music of the Second Viennese School. A theorist, writer, teacher, conductor, jazz pianist, Schoenberg scholar and composer, he brought together the disparate aesthetics of the German 12-tone school with French surrealism and exisentialism. Uncompromising as a composer, he appears to have followed Schoenbergian techniques throughout his composing career, even while he built a conducting career around traditional Romantic and French composers. He particularly disliked Jan Sibelius’s music and criticized Bartók for pandering to popular taste. If your quintet is interested in exploring 12-tone repertoire after the Schoenberg Quintet, Leibowitz should be worth a look. (Credits: Grove Music Online; Wikipedia) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Leichtling, Alan (Avrohom) (1947- )

Quintet No. 2, Op. 24 (1964)

New York: American Music Center

The composer writes that this work “…was written … just after I had been graduated from the High School of Music and Art (NYC) and before my first years at Juilliard.” He describes the work as “neo-classical.”

Quintet No. 3, Op. 33, (1965, revised 1982)

Verona, New Jersey: Seesaw Music 1969, 1983 /

New York: American Music Center

Movements: 1. Timoroso; 2. Scherzo 1; 3. Andante; 4. Scherzo 2; 5. Adagio.

Again, the composer: “Quintet #3, Opus 33, was written a year later, and is already light years ahead of the earlier work. …the 3rd is a serial composition falling somewhere between Webernian pointillism and Carterian chaos. At 9+ minutes, it is also about one third the length of the earlier work. It was one of the first pieces to be “published” by Seesaw. I prepared a revised version of it in the 1980’s (which Seesaw has). I still stand by it.”

N.B. Quintet No. 1 is not a woodwind quintet, but for flute and string quartet. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Naisen muotokuva (A Portrait of a Woman)(2013) for woodwind quintet, violin, viola, and double bass

Helsinki: Music Finland https://core.musicfinland.fi/

Intended for spatially separated ensemble, the flute doubling on piccolo and alto flute; oboe doubles English horn; clarinet doubles bass clarinet; bassoon doubles contrabassoon; horn, violin, viola, and double bass. The composer collaborated with Heta Kuchka, but the website doesn’t explain the nature of the collaboration. The movements deal with types of criticism of women artists through centuries: 1. “restrained, controlledly soulful”; 2. “Women longed for more spiritual subjects”; 3. “Like pale, timid and solemn flowers”; 4. “Minor subjects were suitable for women”; 5. “All those paintresses seem to bear their misfortunes with remarkable tranquility”. See the composer’s website, http://www.minnaleinonen.com/ , for more info (or for Finnish).

According to the composer’s website:
Minna Leinonen’s and Heta Kuchka’s collaboration… portrays women’s work and life through ages by connecting music and visualisation. The wish of the commissioners was to bring the idea of being a female artist from the historical perspective to the present and at the same time to make a reference to the 150th anniversary of Venny Soldan-Brofeldt. The titles of movements I-IV are citations from criticism that paintresses received in the 19th century, the title of the fifth movement quotes one of Soldan-Brofeldt’s´s own remarks. The music in Naisen muotokuva sets side by side three eras prominent to female arts: melodies from the medieval mystic Hildegard von Bingen not silenced by the church because her works were considered epiphanic; criticism of 19th century paintresses’ works which were seen as curiocities rather than works of art; and finally contemporary art, in which the sex of the artist in conventional sense is not relevant and in which integrating female and male qualities might even be essential.

Liadov (or Lyadov or Ljadow), Anatoly Konstantinovich (1855-1914)

Eight Russian Folk Dances, Op. 58 (1906) (No arranger listed)

Belwin Mills Publishing / Masters /

Miami, Fla.: Kalmus: Warner Bros. Publications, [2005]

Los Angeles: Western International Music

Movements: Religious chant; Christmas carol; Plaintive song; Humorous song (“I danced with a flea”); Legend of the birds; Cradle song; Round dance; Village dance.

Good arrangements of the Liadov orchestra suite. Liadov is the composer whose procrastination lost him a commission by Diaghilev, which gave Stravinsky the chance to write The Firebird. (And so music history was changed.) The 8 dances are short works appropriate for educational concerts, receptions, background music, as well as the occasional light recital. The seventh movement works very well with piccolo instead of flute, although it’s not scored that way. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Vosem russkikh narodnykh pesen (Eight Russian Folk Dances, Op. 58) (arr. V. S. Gurfinkel)

Moskva: Muzyka, 1964 /

Boca Raton, Florida: Masters Music Publications, 1991

Is Gurfinkel the missing arranger to the Belwin-Mills/Kalmus/Western Int’l edition? Maybe a Russian music sleuth can tell us? [ Andrew Brandt ]

Score and parts and two recordings (by the Concordia Ensemble and by the Ion Bogdan Stefanescu ensemble) are currently available for download from the International Music Score Library Project, https://imslp.org/wiki/Images_interrupted_(Alexandra%2C_Liana) .

The work uses advanced instrumental techniques and notation, so ensembles will definitely want to view the score and listen to the above recordings before programming the work. The work’s tone colors are evocative and could be worth programming for the adventurous quintet. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Windjammer (2009)

Dedicated to the New Mexico Winds. Duration: 11:15.

According to the composer’s website: Windjammer (2009) is a spiritually uplifting composition animated by the unique instrumental colors of the wind quintet, dialogue among the instruments, and rhythmic energy. The inspiration for the piece springs from two sources: the syncopated, improvisatory aura of jazz, and water imagery suggesting the light and movement of the sea.

Sechs Bagatellen (Six Bagatelles) (1953)

Mainz: Schott, 1973: Hal Leonard (dist.), 2001,1973

Flute doubles on piccolo. Duration: 12:30.

One of the best twentieth century works for quintet; it’s a wonderful recital piece. Several movements actually work quite well for educational concerts for young students, too. These are virtuoso display pieces with a lot of musical depth. I’ve performed this several times, but the CARION quintet’s Youtube 2014 video at http://youtu.be/txMWXvD8kL4 is exceptionally well performed and staged. (Performed from memory, too.) (Also recorded by the Stockholm Wind Quintet on Stockholm’s Caprice label in 2018.) [ Andrew Brandt ]

Jon Halvor Lund of the University of Hannover explains that these pieces are arranged from the 3rd, 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th movements of “Musica Ricercata,” written for piano. “Musica Ricercata” is written such that the first movement has only 2 pitches (in different octaves), the 2nd movement 3 pitches, the 3rd movement 4 notes, etc., until the 11th movement, which has all 12 notes of the octave. This means, the 1st movement of the Sechs Bagatelles (from No. 3 of the “Musica Ricercata,”) has 4 notes only (C, E-flat;, E, G), etc.

Zehn Stücke (Ten Pieces) (1968)

Mainz: B. Schott’s Sohne, New York: Schott Music Corp., 1969

Flute doubles on alto flute. Oboe doubles on English horn (and oboe d’amore if available). Duration: 15:00. See Youtube recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ysuddlMbW9U recorded by the Quintette à Vent Claude Debussy. Also recorded by the Stockholm Wind Quintet on Stockholm’s Caprice label in 2018.

More difficult than the Six Bagatelles. The trio movement (flute, clarinet, and oboe) makes dramatically effective use of difference tones that’ll drive the audience (and the bassoonist) up the walls. Excellent work. These two Ligeti quintets should be studied by orchestration students as examples of great writing for winds. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Arthur Cohn in “The Literature of Chamber Music” reports that Ligeti called this one of his “tightrope pieces” due to its difficulty.

The arranger notes: “I have made a conscious decision to retain the original key of the piece (F# minor) and woodwind solos. Look out for the interesting tone colours when the flute plays in its lower registers with higher unison passages by the oboe or the clarinet. This decision to put the flute in its lower register is also made to help ensure that the other woodwinds have a chance to lead the melody as well.”

Lindner, Friedrich (1795-1846)

Quintet in B-flat major, Op. 1 (ca. 1820)

Hofmeister, 1820

Amsterdam: Edition Compusic, 1992

Bradfield, Berkshire, England: Rosewood Publications

Movements: Allegro; Menuett-Trio; Andante; Tempo Polacca. Some vendors refer to the wrong Lindner in their catalogs. There is also a Friedrich Lindner (1542-1597), but it is unlikely he wrote a woodwind quintet since the modern clarinet hadn’t yet been invented, and the bassoon just barely. The traditional reference books don’t list a Lindner of 1795-1846, but several online resources refer to him, including the OCLC WorldCat database. Assuming that this work was published about 1820, it was published at about the same time Reicha was publishing his 24 quintets. Making this a much less well-known member of the early quintets club.

A short music clip of the work clearly shows this to be an early 19th century work, similar to Danzi’s style. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Lindpaintner, Peter Joseph von (1791-1856)

Sinfonie-concertante pour flûte, hautbois, clarinette, cor et basson, avec accompagnement de grand orchestra, Op. 36

Kircheim: Hans Pizka, 1986 /

Adliswil/Zurich: Edition Kunzelmann, 1992.

According to Clive Brown’s article in Grove Music Online, Lindpaintner was primarily a conductor and composer of operas, but these two sinfonia concertantes were among the most successful of his orchestral works.

Dexterous Dots

Download score and parts from http://arsventus.ro/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/LIPATTI-Dinu-Six-sonatas-of-Scarlatti-for-woodwind-quintett.pdf

Not only does the score not list the sources of the different sonatas, it doesn’t even say which Scarlatti wrote them, although presumably they are from Domenico Scarlatti harpsichord sonatas. Score and parts have been nicely transcribed into PDFs with a modern notation software package.

Weihnachtsbaum Suite (Christmas Tree Suite, 1881) (arr. John Gibson)

JB Linear Music www.music4woodwinds.com

Originally a suite of 12 pieces for piano (or piano 4-hands) written for his granddaughter, this arrangement includes: 1. Altes Weihnachtlied (An Old Christmas Carol); 3. Die Hirten an der Krippe (The Shepherds at the Manger)(In dulce jubilo); 4.Adeste Fideles (O come all ye faithful); 5.Scherzoso (Lighting the candles on the tree); 8. Altes provenzalisches Weihnachtslied (Old Provençal Carol); 9. Evening Bells. (These movements can also be purchased individually.) Liszt dedicated Weihnachtsbaum to his first grandchild Daniela von Bülow, daughter of Cosima and Hans von Bülow. The first performance was on Christmas Day 1881 in Daniela’s hotel room, during a holiday trip to Rome.

Wind Quintet (1982)

London: Boosey & Hawkes, 1983

Duration: 4:00.

The British Library catalog has a tantalizing, but unconfirmed, mention of another Wind Quintet for flute (doubling alto flute), oboe (doubling English horn), clarinet in A, bassoon and horn, which is a microfilm copy of a facsimile of the composer’s autograph score, which is in the hire library of Boosey & Hawkes. But the B&H online catalog makes no mention of it. I’m inclined to think this second quintet is a misattribution of one of the works below. But if any of our readers in London would like to visit The British Library in St. Pancras to check the work and share the info with us, it would be appreciated. [ Andrew Brandt ]

“Ben’s Boogie” from Three Dances (1981-82)

London: Boosey & Hawkes hire library

Ben’s Boogie is the middle movement from a set of Three Dances. The first movement (Keir’s Kick) is a string quartet and the third is for woodwind quintet (with English horn instead of oboe) and string quartet or orchestra. Although the composer is British, the work was premiered in Iceland in 1982.

Tres Nocturnos Latinoamericanos (Three Latin-American Nocturnes)

Blacksburg, Virginia: Cayambis Music Press (www.cayambismusicpress.com/

Duration: 16:00.

In notes on the publisher’s website, a commentator (probably the composer) writes: “Written as a tribute to Claude Debussy on the centenary of his death, this work refers to two of his most famous compositions: “Trois Nocturnes” and “Prélude à l’après-midi d’un faune.” Indeed, in this quintet there are extra-musical programmatic references similar to those used by the French composer in his music. In the first movement, “Soñando con la comparsa,” a young Brazilian dancer falls asleep and dreams that he’s chasing a group of beautiful dancers during a carnival parade (like the faun in “Prelude”). In “Serenata sentimental,” a traditional Latin American scene is portrayed when a young man in love, along with a group of friends, sings under the balcony of his beloved on a warm Caribbean night. In “Romance callejero,” an underworld love story is told using the tunes of the previous nocturnes, which are presented in a classic rondo form. The prolific use of the low registers in all of the instruments, long solos that contrast with full homophonic passages, a slow harmonic rhythm with ecstatic chords, and predominantly soft dynamics, are some of the resources used to create a fantastic atmosphere that is characteristic of the music of Impressionist composers of the 20th century.”

Most sources list this as a quartet, dated 1940, for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. However, some references list this as a woodwind quintet dated 1958. (The American Music Center says “quartet” 1974.) (No source lists 2 different versions.) So two or three versions of this work may exist. In any case, the original title was “Mr. Boogie-Woogie Goes for a Buggy Ride” (according to Cohn).

Ballet Egyptien No. 1 (arr. G. E. Holmes)

Oskaloosa, Iowa: C. L. Barnhouse, Inc., 1939

Although his father emigrated from Italy to France, he gave his son a longer, more French-sounding name: Alexandre Clément Léon Joseph Luigini. The quintet is an arrangement of a portion of Luigini’s ballet, Ballet égyptien.

This Ballet Egyptien is a pleasant, fairly easy piece. We’ve often used it for educational concerts. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Lumsdaine, David (1931- )

Mandala I (1967)

York [England]: University of York Music Press, 2003, 1997

Other Mandelas (II-V) are for other instrumental combinations.
Duration: 15:00. David Lumsdaine is married to Nicola LeFanu listed above.

“Throughout Mandala 1 there is an entire absence of foreground pulse (beat) and meter. Shapes float across one another, reflect one another, sometimes collide with, and refract one another; isolated tones hang suspended in the air; no sooner do two or three instruments come together, but they ripple off into their own time field. This lack of regularity takes the music to the bounds of playability in terms of ensemble and gives it what may be, at first, a disconcerting character for the listener.” See also: http://www.australianmusiccentre.com.au/ and http://www.davidlumsdaine.org.uk/

Lutosławski, Witold (1913-1994)

Dance Preludes (Preludia taneczne) (1959) for woodwind quintet and string quartet

London: Chester Music, Ltd.

Movements: 1. Allegro molto; 2. Andantino; 3. Allegro giocoso; 4. Andante; 5. Allegro molto.Duration: 7:00. String quartet consists of violin, viola, cello, bass. This version of the Dance Preludes was created for the ensemble called the “Czech Nonet.” Two earlier versions of this work exist for clarinet and piano, and clarinet with orchestra, according to Cohn.

Previous listings on this site for 2 woodwind quintets by Lutoslawski were in error (and a bit embarrassing, to be honest). I have not been able to replicate that research or the source of the errors. But there is a Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon that apparently was once lost and fairly recently published by PWM. For future researchers: the most complete list of Lutoslawski’s compositions that I have found is on the International Music Score Library Project website: https://imslp.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Witold_Lutos%C5%82awski , although Wikipedia’s repertoire list appears to be very good, too.
