Taking a long view, the piece begins in archetypes of pre-history and travels in its six movements into a vision of future happiness that includes audience participation.” Written for members of the Quintet of the Americas, which owns the set of indigenous instruments.

Peter Schickele has led a double life as a composer and as a musical satirist and humorist, known as Professor Peter Schickele, the musicolologist who discovered P.D.Q. Bach (the last and least of Johann Sebastian Bach’s sons). I attended a couple of his P.D.Q. Bach concerts in New York with the esteemed “New York Pick-up Ensemble” and enjoyed them and his many recordings. He only rarely performs now, but that leaves him more time for his “serious” composing, including the work featured here. If, somehow, you are a musician and have not heard of P.D.Q. Bach, rush and order some of the albums and also get “The Definitive Biography of P.D.Q. Bach” before it gets banned from publication. If you do know P.D.Q. Bach, take a look at this piece for something different. [Andrew Brandt]

Beverly Hills, Ca.: Scherzo Music, 1987,

Maryland Heights, Mo.: Scherzo Music distributed exclusively by Keiser Classical

Milwaukee, Wis.: Distributed exclusively by Hal Leonard, 2012

Duration: 7:20. Recorded by the Dorian Quintet, Summit Records, Koch International: DCD 117 Summit. They also have a recording available on their recordings page. See also: http://www.schifrin.com/

Two generations of TV and movie viewers know Schifrin’s work as the composer of the theme to “Mission Impossible” and music for other popular shows, but this quintet shows a very different musical side to the composer.
This is a quirky work requiring a professional-level quintet with a great deal of rhythmic security. The difficulties of the work are exacerbated by the fact that the publisher puts no cues in any of the parts, requiring the players to spend hours checking the score, writing in cues and memorizing other parts before performing the work. The lack of printed cues adds a huge amount of time to the preparation of the work.
There are two main parts to this piece. The first is a rhythmically complex, angular, often staccato section, sometimes requiring many of the players to play in complex rhythmic unison, alternating with brief solos for the different instruments. This leads into the second contrasting section which pays homage to the New Orleans blues tradition (with a nod to the Preservation Hall Jazz Band style), hence the title. This part begins with a slower section, reminiscent of a New Orleans jazz funeral procession, followed by a quicker blues march, with a brief slow coda. The clarinet, naturally, has a prominent role in the jazz sections. The two sections are knitted together by a simple rhythmic figure – especially prominent in the first section – which reappears in the funeral march.
Everybody gets a chance to display their technique. There are a few licks which are impossible (or nearly impossible) to perform as written at the suggested tempos. (I.e., a 2-bar section of the bassoon part is nearly unplayable in the lowest register, but quite easy an octave higher.)
Our quintet probably spent about 10-12 hours rehearsing for a performance of this work, which is considerable considering that it lasts just over 7 minutes. Audiences may be a bit startled in the initial section, but in Shreveport, Louisiana, the references to New Orleans jazz seem to have been appreciated. Other quintets may enjoy the work if they have sufficient time for the slow, patient preparation it requires. [Andrew Brandt]

3 Quintettes

Paris: Ignaz Pleyel

Further research needs to be done on these works. If Schmitt did die in 1802 and if his three quintets are, in fact, for woodwind quintet, they might be the earliest ones composed. (Cambini’s woodwind quintets were published in 1802.) Pleyel set up his publishing house in Paris in 1795, so the dates are plausible. [Andrew Brandt]

A lengthy, ambitious work that defined 12-tone serial style. Quite difficult. Second movement requires piccolo instead of flute. If a professional quintet wants to learn all the different compositional styles of the twentieth century, they need to perform this sometime. Once you sink your teeth into it, there’s a lot to like. (Some audience members might disagree, though.) If you do decide to perform this work, be prepared to live with it through many, many rehearsals. (When we performed this work, we rewarded the audience (and ourselves) by following it with the Poulenc Sextet after intermission.) See my blog post in The Cracked Reed Blog about Schoenberg’s Quintet, Op. 26 for more info and links to recordings. [Andrew Brandt]

From the YouTube excerpt, this work has the feel of a Latin Big Band more than the usual concerto of quintet and band. Not to every woodwind quintet’s taste, but I imagine it would definitely be a crowd-pleaser at a band concert if the ensemble and director were experienced in Latin music. [Andrew Brandt]

Barbera Secrist-Schmedes, in Wind Chamber Music, says “Written without bar lines and often in irrational rhythms, the individual lines move in what often sounds like improvisatory, unmeasured time and then suddenly coincide in regular, clearly defined rhythms. Likewise, the harmony moves freely from austerely contrapuntal to the richly homophonic.”

Archipelago for woodwind and string quintets (2009) or with additional piano (revised version 2013)

Activist Music

Scored for normal woodwind quintet with 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass. The 2013 version adds piano. See her website, http://www.alexshapiro.org/index.html

The composer writes, “I live in a beautiful archipelago in which each island has a distinct character. Some are similar to each other, and others cause me to wonder what the geo- and meteorological forces could have been to make them so contrasting. This piece is not dissimilar, as it wends its way through a series of cohesive but varied segments, each subject to the forces of my own emotional geology.
“Similarly, a musical ensemble is its own archipelago: wonderfully contrasting individuals who, when experienced together, form a compelling, unified group. As with navigating the channels and straits between isles, or those of one’s psyche, Archipelago offers a journey, and every listener will experience the landscape differently.”

The Washington Post printed: “By far the most provocative was Nightwatch, Clare Shore’s highly impressionistic evocation of the 12 signs of the zodiac. From its fanfare-like beginning to its quivering, haunting close, the piece covers an immense amount of dramatic territory. Each section reveals a clear structure and mood; at times Shore’s layering and highlighting of flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon and horn is positively orchestral.”

Restless Winds (1986)

New York: Seesaw Music, 1986

See also: http://www.fayeellensilverman.com/ . Duration: 5:00. Commissioned by and dedicated to the Con Spirito Woodwind Quintet.

According to the composer, “As the name of the woodwind quintet that commissioned this work is Con Spirito, the title ‘Restless Winds’ immediately came to mind. In this short work, five different ideas – each with distinct tempo, timbre, and melodic or gestural material – are intercut. No idea remains present for too long, however, since the winds are too “restless” to stay on a conventional course. The ordering of these ideas (which often vary with each appearance) is meant to seem unpredictable. The nonchalant bassoon material – a meandering melody that continually gets diverted – unifies the composition via its appearance at the beginning, end, and within the work. As with the title (and, hence, with the form), the dance-like nature of some of the main ideas also derives from free association with the name Con Spirito.”

Windscape (1977)

New York: Seesaw Music, 1966 1977

Duration: 5:00. Commissioned by and dedicated to the Con Spirito Woodwind Quintet.

According to the composer, “‘Windscape’ is in one slow movement interrupted by a fast middle section. The work is soft at both beginning and ending, as are many works that begin from nothing and recede to nothing. The held notes of the slower sections contrast minor with major seconds. The flute part uses harmonics to soften the sound as the work approaches its end.”

arrangements

Fairest of the Fair (1908) (arr. Bill Holcombe & Bill Holcombe, Jr.)

Chesapeake, VA: Bill Holcombe’s Musicians Pub’s (http://billholcombe.com/).

All of the original marches by John Philip Sousa have been recorded by the U.S. Marine Band, “The President’s Own”, the same band that Sousa directed and made famous. They are available on YouTube where some even have short program note introductions. Note that many published versions of these marches did not always reflect Sousa’s exact scoring and dynamics, so it’s interesting to see the different performace practices used by the band (i.e., a real ship’s bell used in The Liberty Bell march). (Their video recordings also show some of the flashiest dress uniforms you will ever see!) [Andrew Brandt]

Described as “Five contrasting movements displaying Afro, Anglo, Latino and Native American musical styles.” Movements: I Ride an Old Paint (Cowboy Song, USA); Adolorido (Mexico); Jesus Is a Rock in the Weary Land (Spiritual/ Blues, USA); Yaravi (Peru); A Frog Went A-Courtin’ (USA).

These arrangements are a bit easier and simpler than the two other Still works listed above and, thus, a bit less interesting. Good for
student quintets and we’ve used “A Frog Went A-Courtin’” (which has a particularly froggish bassoon part) for several school concerts. [Andrew Brandt]

Strauss, Richard (1864-1949)

Till Eulenspiegel einmal anders! (Till Eulenspiegal Another Way) (arr. Franz Hasenohrl)

Although it appears to have been listed elsewhere as a woodwind quintet, it really is an arrangement of Till Eulenspiegel by Franz Hasenohrl for a virtuosic quintet of violin, clarinet, horn, bassoon and bass. Trying to arrange any Richard Strauss tone poem for a woodwind quintet might be a pipe dream.

Stravinsky, Igor (1882-1971)

The Five Fingers (arr. Clark McAlister)

Boca Raton, Florida: Masters Music

Originally for piano. Scored by the composer as “8 instrumental miniatures for 15 players.”

Pastorale (arr. Robert McBee)

unpublished?

Relatively easy arrangement of the Stravinsky work, cut and transposed.

Davyd Breeskin suggests that this arrangement might be based on the (much shorter) original 1907 song (for soprano and piano), not the (1934) instrumental work, which would explain the discrepancies between the scores.
I say do the 1933 instrument version (scored for violin, oboe, English horn, clarinet and bassoon) and give the English horn part to the French horn and the violin part to the flute. (You do have to play in six sharps.) It sounds better. (This also requires Clarinet in A.) [Andrew Brandt]

Pastorale (arr. ?) for woodwind quartet or quintet

It could possibly be the McBee arrangement above. See my performance suggestion, too.

A Moonshiner Laughs, from “Moods of a Moonshiner”

Charlotte, North Carolina: Brodt Music Co. /

London, New York: H. Baron & Co., 1940

For those readers not familiar with American folk culture, moonshine is a home-brewed alcoholic beverage popular in rural parts of the Appalachian Mountains. Traditionally it was manufactured out in the countryside in a still (distillery) to escape detection from liquor tax officers known as “revenuers,” who would destroy the illegal stills they found. Thus a “Moonshiner” was a country yokel who made such a brew, carefully hiding his still, guarding it with a shotgun, and illegally selling as much brew as he managed not to drink himself. Suchý, František, Prazsky (of Prague)(1891-1973)

Suchý, František, Brnensky (of Brno)(1902-1977)

There are two Czech composers named František Suchý, but many catalogs, at least in English, have made little distinction between the two. The online Czech Music database, http://www.musicbase.cz/, distinguishes between the composers, but only lists one of the quintet works between the two. Finally, the Czech-language version of Wikipedia added some clarity, but my knowledge of Czech is limited to a few musical terms (and Google Translate is far from perfect).
Apparently Suchy-Prague was more active as a conductor and arranger of Czech folk tunes.
The majority of the listed pieces below are by Suchy-Brno, who appears to have been an oboist as well as a composer. Clearly, more research needs to be done here, preferably by a Czech music historian who can translate his or her findings into English. [Andrew Brandt]

Here are the works that appear to be by František Suchý, Brnensky:

Bläserquintett, Op. 5 (1928)

Quintetto Concertante (Koncertantni kvintet), Op. 34 (1947)

Praha, Panton, 1969

Three Czech Dances, Op. 40 (1952)

Bläserquintett, Op. 45 (1958)

also:

Concertino, Op. 13 (1931) for woodwind quintet and violin

The following works are listed for František Suchý, and might be by Suchy-Praszky, but I’ve not been able to confirm which of the two composers they are by:

Kleine Tanzsuite, Op. 10 (1931)

Wind Quintet (1936)

London: Boosey & Hawkes

Opera “Der Spiegel von Arkadien” (arr. Schmitt) for double woodwind quintet and serpent

Manuscript in Furstlich Leiningsche Hofbibliothek, Amorbach.

I actually had the opportunity to try to play serpent once (a large S-shaped conical bored instrument with brass mouthpiece and fingerholes. Once you get your hands on one, it shouldn’t be too terribly hard to learn. (Think extra-extra-large cornetto if you have experience in a Renaissance band.) In a pinch, a small baritone or a bassoon or even a contrabassoon might suffice. (A contrabassoon would be an octave lower than a serpent, of course.) [Andrew Brandt]

Woodwind Quintet (Fuvosotos) (1951)

Editio Musica Budapest, 1957 /

London: Boosey & Hawkes

I’ve not found a complete performance of this work on the Web, but the Azahar ensemble has released their performances of the first three movements: each in a separate video, taken from two different performances: first movement (Adagio – Allegro Moderato); second movement (Allegro Scherzoso and Trio), and the third movement (Andante). To complete the work, the Dorian Winds has an MP3 sound file of just the fourth movement (Allegro Vivace).

This is a fun, tonal, highly melodic piece with a Hungarian flavor, in four movements. There are lots of scale passages but it’s not terribly difficult; good for advanced student quintets or for a pro quintet needing to put together a recital quickly. Recommended. [Andrew Brandt]
