Quintette (1876)

Kalmus – Belwin-Mills /

International Music Corp. (edited by Don Stewart)

Paris: Alphonse Leduc, 1878, 1990

Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com

Movements: Allegro; Andante; Vivace. Duration: 20:00. Score and parts also available for download on the International Music Score Library Project site: http://imslp.org/wiki/Wind_Quintet_(Taffanel,_Paul). See also the Andraud 22 Quintets.

This is the most popular of the later Romantic-style quintets in the literature (post-Reicha, of course). It is now standard quintet repertoire, with enough challenges to keep it interesting for the professional quintet. Historically, Taffanel was not only active as a flutist, teacher, and composer, he was also an opera conductor, a Baroque music revivalist (even as he conducted Wagner at the Paris Opéra), a promoter of French music, and founder of the Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent (Society of Chamber Music for Wind Instruments) in 1878. There are a number of other works on this list that are the result of commissions from that group or were featured in performances by members of that group. It would be interesting to research the influence both Anton Reicha and Paul Taffanel had on the Paris Conservatoire’s curriculum and influence in French music, in general. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Tailleferre, Germaine (1892-1983)

Choral et Deux Variations (1979)

Lagny sur Marne, France: Musik Fabrik, 2003

Movements: Choral; Pastourelle; Rigaudon. According to Colleen Corey White (see link below), these movements are arrangements by Tailleferre from the first, fifth and eight movements of her Choral et Variations for orchestra or piano duo. Born Germaine Taillefesse (changing her name in protest against her father, and perhaps also because the name Taillefesse translates as “cut buttock”), there are two published versions of this work, one for woodwind and another for brass quintet. See her biography and a list of works published by Musik Fabrik on http://www.classicalmusicnow.com/tailleferre.htm .

The only woman in the French composer group, Les Six, she also spent parts of her career in the United States. Many of her works were only published after her death, and her biography suggests that owners had a bad habit of losing her scores. Don’t confuse this work with the Choral et Variations for two pianos (which shows up in the same Google search). Colleen Corey White does a short analysis of this work, as well as descriptions of Tailleferre’s works for winds and piano, in her excellent dissertation, Selected Solo and Chamber Works for Clarinet by Germaine Tailleferre: Historical, Compositional and Pedagogical Perspectives.

Talle, Silvain

Quintête, 2012

Published by the composer.

Apparently loosely based on some Baroque music forms, the movements are: Allegro Moderato; Andante; Vivace.
Individual movements are available for download from free-scores.com starting at http://www.free-scores.com/download-sheet-music.php?pdf=77524 . For some reason, the third movement only offers a score and not the parts. There may be a performance fee involved.

Based on the scores and the MP3 realizations, these are pleasant, tonal, not-very-adventurous pieces. Possibly interesting for students. [Andrew Brandt]

Written for the Richmond Symphony Woodwind Quintet for a tour of Africa. The composer is a Ugandan who was studying in the U.S. when he created this work. Rhythmically complex, the work is based on the Kigandan folk music of Uganda. Each player also takes turns doubling on maracas with some foot stamping at the end. Oboist Michael Lisicky tells me they got standing ovations for this work in Africa and the U.S. [Andrew Brandt]

Movements: Allegro; Andantino (Acalanto); Tempo de coco. Duration: 14:00.

The first movement has a Brazilian dance-like quality (to my ear, Bossa-Nova-ish). The second movement has a slow, rocking 6/8, almost lullaby feel. The third movement is a simple ABA form with a lively, samba-like theme in the outer sections, framing a slower song-like theme in the middle. All in all it’s a light, energetic concert piece featuring Latin dance rhythms. This work is recorded by the Quinteto Villa-Lobos. See our blog for instructions on how to download the sound files. Petite Suite from the 18th century (arr. Laurence Taylor)

New York: Mills Music, 1941

A variety of movements brought together as a suite: Introduction; Grave (Corelli); Courante (Handel); Air (Loeillet). The citation states that the ‘ 1st movement [possibly the Introduction plus the Grave] is freely adapted from a sonata for violin and continuo, based on Corelli. The Courante is likely from a Handel work for harpsichord; and the ‘3rd’ movement by Loeillet was originally for recorder, oboe and continuo (which would probably make the original by Jean Baptiste Loeillet known as ‘John of London’, not his cousin Jean Baptiste Loeillet de Gant.)

Ross Taylor was briefly hornist with the New York Woodwind Quintet and appears to later have been the hornist with the California Wind Quintet, based in the San Francisco area. If my internet research is correct, Ross Taylor was the nom de cor of Taylor-Ross Whiteside, principal hornist of the Cleveland Orchestra and later the San Francisco Symphony in the 1950s and 60s, who tragically took his own life in 1964 at the age of 39. (His wife, Onnie, a singer and vocal teacher, passed away in 2012.) Arrangements of his are scattered throughout this list under different composer’s names. According to the composer, “If it is helpful to have abstract images in mind and ear as you hear the music, for movement #1, please imagine the musicians as playful, capricious, virtuosic hummingbirds darting around a garden, whizzing across multifaceted, rapid changing chord progressions in a bebop-like, fast tempo. For movement #2, swans majestically floating in a lake, as the morning sun gradually rises, are infused with Bill Evans’ impressionist harmony and trademark rhythmically independent, singing, melodic lines. For movement #3, please envision active, jaunty, and alert canaries crisscrossing the perfumes of Charley Parker’s Yardbird Suite and Ornithology.

Variations sur un thème corse (1925)

Paris: Alphonse Leduc, 1938

A Corsican theme and 6 variations. Although born in Marseille, Tomasi visited his grandmother in Corsica in 1913 and heard many traditional Corsican songs, which later led to this composition. Although Tomasi had been writing and improvising music from a young age, these Variations are considered his first complete composition, written while studying at the Conservatoire de Paris and winning an award. Recorded by le Quintette à Vent de l’Orchestre Philharmonique de Marseille in 1991.

Quintette à vent (1952)

Paris: Henry Lemoine, 1952 /

Bryn Mawr, PA: Theodore Presser Co.

Paris: Alphonse Leduc

Duration: 19:00.

Cinq Danses Profanes et Sacres (1959)

Paris, Alphonse Leduc, 1963

Each movement was originally written for a solo instrument and piano before the composer arranged them for woodwind quintet. Duration: 13:00 Movements: Danse agreste; Danse profane; Danse sacrée; Danse nuptiale; Danse guerrière. The work was dedicated to the Rejcliovo Decliové Kvinteto de Prague and recorded by the Woodwind Quintet of the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin on BIS-Records in 2009. The quintet score and parts are also available, in countries where the copyright has expired, from the International Music Score Library Project (listed under ‘Arrangements and Transcriptions). (Tomasi also created an orchestra version in 1960.)

also:

Printemps (Spring) (1963) for woodwind quintet and alto saxophone

Paris: Alphonse Leduc, 1967

Movements: Reveil des oiseaux (Awakening of the Birds); Chant d’amour (Song of Love); Danse des oiseaux (Dance of the Birds).

Jeux de Geishas, Suite Japonaise (1936) for woodwind quintet and percussion and string quartet (but see below)

Paris: Editions Max Eschig (now part of Éditions Durand)

Movements: Danse des Parasols; Les Guerriers; Danse des Papillongs; Prière Bouddhique; Le Samouraï et la Geisha. Duration: 30:00. This appears to have been written for a radio broadcast of 1937. (Do not confuse this work with his Chansons de Geishas.)

Listings for this work are highly inconsistent as far as the instrumentation. The National Library of France lists this for woodwind quintet. WorldCat has a listing for woodwind quintet and percussion. The publisher Max Eschig lists their publication for woodwind quintet, percussion, harp (or piano) and string quartet, and there is also an errant listing of piano quintet version with strings. The website Musicologie.org, in its list of Tomasi’s works, gives the instrumentation pour quintette à vent et percussions ou piano et quatuor à cordes. It could be that their listing is most accurate, if you interpret this as: woodwind quintet and (percussion OR piano)), AND string quartet – and NOT as (woodwind quintet and percussion) OR (piano and strings). (All of which confusion might have been avoided with the addition of a comma – but that’s apparently not the French way.) The Muziekweb website has excerpts from an audio recording that includes winds, tuned percussion (xylophone and tom-toms to my ear) and strings. The Henri Tomasi website (ttps://www.henri-tomasi.fr/) offers a recording of the full first movement, possibly from the same recording listed in Muziekweb. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Wind Quintet No. 1 (Homm-ages) (1987, revised 2013)

Available under a Creative Commons license from the International Music Score Library Project. http://imslp.org/wiki/Main_Page

Movements: Constellatio I.D.A.; PUzzle; Crossnotes; Sandclock. A spatial work, a series of instructions accompany the parts.

The composer states: “This Woodwind quintet is a several tributes to the twentieth century composers who were pioneers of various musical revolutions. The work if formed by four musical pieces, each one devoted to one or more composers applying the technique that each composer utilized, for example: Cage utilized star maps to compose, hence a constellation is formed, Messiaen was inspired by the birds singing and their intricate rhythms, Berio used a novel space-time writing but that space-time was already inherent in musical notation invented by Guido D’Arezzo one thousand years ago. Reich uses a melodic cell repeated ad infinitum but it changes imperceptibly. With all this we find that these procedures existed in other eras of history of music but under a different light. Each musician plays each of these pieces of (almost)-independent, so that each piece or movement is a kind of ‘collage’ in which the piece overlaps itself, this overlap must be set to the sound space thanks to which musicians are placed in different parts of the concert-hall spreading sounds among the public, providing distance and location of sound sources in three dimensional space.”

Im Windesweben I, II, III, IV (2014)

Even though the video recording on the composer’s website [ https://www.torresmaldonado.net/ ] includes a score to follow along, it was still difficult to figure out the numbering sequence for these pieces. Parts I, II, and III seem each have sections alternating between horn solos and woodwind quartet and trio ensemble sections. The entire ensemble comes together in part IV. The collection is an uncompromising modern work with extended techniques, which sounds aleatoric but is entirely written out rhythmically. The performance was an impressive achievement, but I found myself hoping it would just end at about the halfway point, which is never a good sign. Listen for yourself and draw your own conclusions. Duration: 8:25. Recorded by the Quinteto de Alientos de la Ciudad de México (the Mexico City Woodwind Quintet).

As far as I can figure out, this work is inspired by the Nahua or Aztec people of ancient central Mexico. According to some poetic texts, they might have had a way of getting drunk on a mushroom liquor, although I could be confused about that and I’ve never tried mushroom liquor. The text for this work could be in the Nahua language, although I would check that before ordering. [ Andrew Brandt ]

One of the best modern (well, late-20th century modern) quintets we’ve performed, with good audience response, too. Oboe part is appropriately challenging and rewarding. The main problem with rehearsing this work is that the parts have too few cues marked. There is a great deal of rhythmic complexity in the score, so you must allow a lot of rehearsal time for learning the other parts and writing cues into the rests. [Andrew Brandt]

Available from the composer: 785 Twin Pines Circle, Ashland, OR 97520 USA

According to the composer: This is my first large work, 276
measures long, and completed when I was 19. Fortspinnung is a one movement l2-tone piece that “spins forth” from the beginning through many sections which I gave descriptive names. At certain points near the end of the work the instruments begin one by one dropping out of the measured music and skip ahead to a region at the end where the pitches and some dynamics are given, but the relative speeds the instruments play at are determined individually.

A Feather in the Morning Air (1999-2005) for double woodwind quintet

From the composer, http://tuckermusicworks.com/

Duration: 10:30.

According to the composer, ” “A Feather in the Morning Air began in the spring of 2000 for double woodwind quintet. The orchestral score was completed in 2002. The composition incorporates stylistic techniques from Percy Grainger’s catalogue of repertoire. A Feather in the Morning Air consists of two main melodic lines, an original melody which dominates the work, and as a tribute to Percy Grainger, Oh, Danny Boy, aka. Irish Tune from County Derry. I employ both melodies through a wide variety of styles and textures. The last four bars embraces the two melodies as well as two frequently used chromatic motives juxtaposed to an overwhelming, steadfast climax.”
