Skizzen (Sketches) — Suite for Woodwind Quintet after
Drawings by Heinrich Kley (1967)

Highgate Press, Galaxy Music Corp., NY, E.C. Schirmer

First performance was by the Northern Illinois University Woodwind quintet. See also: http://www.janbach.com/

Nine movements by an American composer, each illustrating a drawing by the Austrian artist, Alfred Julius Kley. You can purchase slides of the drawings (for slide projector or overhead projector) to show simultaneously with the performance. Some of the movements are very difficult, but hilarious, and the audience will love the musical commentary on the drawings (especially “The Art Critic”). My favorite is “The Love Match” which includes snippets of every work you’ve ever heard at a wedding, although the zany “Dance Craze” finale will keep you tapping toes throughout (it’s in the score). Unfortunately, many of the drawings are unsuitable for young children or (we discovered) for recitals in Baptist churches. (I rate them PG.) [Andrew Brandt]

New York: G. Schirmer, 1931

Have not been able to determine if any copies still exist outside the Juilliard School, although one supposes so. (See the Juilcat catalog online.) In two volumes.

Volume 1:

Around the wigwam, Op. 76, No. 3 by Harvey Worthington Loomis

Petite marche by Leo Delibes

Minuet, from Piano sonata (Phantasie) in G major, Op. 78 by Franz Schubert

The night wind by Roland Farley

Vöglein by Edvard Hagerup Grieg

Minuet by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Pastorale by Igor Stravinsky

The harmonica-player by David W. Guion.

Studying with Claude-Paul Taffanel, Georges Barrére was still a young flutist when he had the good fortune to be the very first flutist to see and perform the famous solo in Debussy’s Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun in Paris. He also organized the Parisian Sociéte moderne d’instruments à vent. Later he went to perform as principal flutist of the New York Philharmonic and taught at Juilliard (hence the “Juilliard series” in the title). [Andrew Brandt]

ARRANGEMENTS OF THE SEXTET FOR WINDS, OP. 71:

Quintet in E-flat (arrangement of the Sextet, Op. 71, “by the Philadelphia Woodwind Quintet”)

Bryn Mawr, PA: Theodore Presser Co.

Nice arrangement of the Sextet. As a bassoonist, I much prefer
this version to the arrangement in Andraud’s “Yellow Books” because the bassoon keeps all the solos from the sextet. (The Andraud arrangement gives many of the same solos to the horn. Sort of like arranging the Mozart Oboe Quartet for Clarinet solo.) [Andrew Brandt]

Quintett in E-flat, Op. 71 (arr. Mordechai Rechtman)

Holzkirchen, Germany: Accolade Musikverlag, 2001

Like the Philadelphia Quintet arrangement, most of the bassoon
solos in the original sextet are kept for that instrument. Ronald Klimko reviews this arrangement as “a very beautiful and convincing transcription of this very popular work for wind quintet. I strongly recommend this work as the arrangement to use….” (The Double Reed, Vol. 24, No. 4)

Sextet, Op. 71, woodwind quintet (arr. Ray Thompson)

Ray Thompson Music: http://raythompsonmusic.weebly.com/

The arranger takes the famous bassoon solo in the second movement and gives it to the horn, so, as a bassoonist, I cannot recommend this arrangement. [Andrew Brandt]

Wind Quintet (1948)

Unpublished early work

Berk, Stacey(1970- )

Avian Suite (2011, for woodwind quintet)

Waupaca, Wisconsin: Cocobolo Music Press, http://cocobolomusic.com/

Movements: Eagle; Chickadee; Olw; Swan; and Hummingbird. Duration: 12:00 Commissioned by Kimberly Helton and The Polaris Wind Quintet in 2011.

According to the composer, “In Eagle, the open intervals and melodic embellishments lend a Native American feel to the introduction. This carries the listener to the magnificent open plains where the music gradually swells into a soaring theme before returning to rest at the end. — Chickadee is the most literal translation of birdsong in the suite, with “chick-a-dee-dee-dees” and “phoe-bes” used as motivic material. In addition, the movement attempts to capture the perky, inquisitive nature of the little bird. — Owl is a shift into a dark forest, with creepy night noises and the bassoon taking the lead with a spooky octatonic melody. — Swan characterizes the beauty of the majestic bird as it sweeps through the water. — Hummingbird is a rondo that uses the quintet to emulate a tiny bird that zooms in and out of sight as it hovers and zips around with its lightning-quick wings.

Portraits of the Odyssey for double woodwind quintet and percussion

Waupaca, Wisconsin: Cocobolo Music Press, http://cocobolomusic.com/

The work relies on doubling of instruments and percussion: Flute 1 doubles on piccolo and alto flute; Flute 2 doubles triangle; Oboe 1 doubles woodblock with soft mallets; Oboe 2 doubles on English horn; 1st clarinet also plays bamboo wind chimes; 2nd clarinet doubles on bass clarinet; 1st bassoon 1 also plays finger cymbals; 2nd bassoon also plays an egg shaker; 1st horn doubles on bell tree; and 2nd horn plays suspended cymbal with a stick. Movements: I. Cyclops (a one-eyed, man-eating giant who is blinded by Odysseus); II. Circe’s Cottage (where men feast jovially before they are transformed into pigs); III. Halls of Hades (the Land of the Dead); IV. Sirens (Sea Nymphs whose singing enchants men to their deaths); V. Scylla & Charybdis (a six-headed monster and a deadly whirlpool by which ships must try to pass); VI. Calypso’s Lament (a beautiful island goddess whose love for Odysseus is unrequited); VII. Ithaca (Odysseus’ home, where he battles the townsmen to regain his castle and wife). Duration: 16:00. This work was premiered by the U.S. Air Force Band of the West Chamber Players. Doodling Through History for double woodwind quintet

Waupaca, Wisconsin: Cocobolo Music Press, http://cocobolomusic.com/

Premiered by the U.S. Air force Band of the West Chamber Players. The work imagines the tune, “Yankee Doodle,” in different historical contexts. Movements: I. Primitive: Neanderdandy; II. Middle Ages: Dandy Chant; III. Renaissance: Monsieur Yanquis and Yankeefa Doodlela; IV. Baroque: Dandyberg Concerto; V. Classical: Eine Kleine Talkmusic and Marriage of Dandigaro; VI. Late Classical/Early Romantic: Ode to (Yankee Doodle) Boy; VII. Romantic: Ride of the Valkyankees and Trisdandy and Isolde; VIII. Early 20th Century: Rite of Doodling; IX. Jazz/Swing: Doodle Mood; X. Late 20th/Early 21st Century: Avant Doodle; XI. Finale: Doodlereviewdle. Duration: 18:30.

According to the composer, this is a “super fun romp through history, using Yankee Doodle as the theme! This piece requires the instrumentalists to *gasp* sing and narrate! One of the musicians acts as a professor, teaching the audience about the different time periods of music history, and each instrumentalist introduces one time period. Make it even more fun with props and costumes!”

Suite in D, Op. 29 (1889) for double woodwind quintet (+ optional double bass?)

Newton Centre, MA: Margun Music

Movements: I. Allegro moderato; II. Andante moderato; III. Allegretto quasi allegro; and IV. Allegro con fuoco. Duration: 26:00. A creditable student performance of the entire work is available on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEuHeqLEXDk

This work was commissioned by French flutist Paul Taffanel and his Parisian wind ensemble, “La Société de Musique de Chambre pour Instruments à vent.” There appear to be some conflicting opus numbers, with Opus 29 referring to both the Suite in D Major for ten winds and also his “Four Novelletten for Piano.” (See the list of works on the International Music Score Library Project site: http://imslp.org/wiki/List_of_works_by_Arthur_H._Bird).

Both of these Arthur Bird works are recorded by the North Texas Chamber Players on Klavier Wind Recordings, KCD-11071. On first listening, both works sounded, to my ears, a bit like a cross between the Gounod Petite Symphonie and the Dvořak Serenade, with a hint more of seriousness and contrapuntal ability. They’re both delightful works in the French Nineteenth Century style and deserve to be rescued from obscurity. [Andrew Brandt]

London: Novello & Co.

According to the composer, “This is one of several works commissioned from me over the years by the Northern Sinfonia. It was written in 1971 and somewhat revised in 1978. It is a substantial piece lasting some twenty minutes and has at its heart a Scherzo which contains three contrasting musics with interrelated tempi. The short, central Trio is a cor anglais solo. An Andante, also full of contrasts, precedes the scherzo, and these two densely through-composed movements are preceded and followed by lighter, more episodic forms. The first movement is a chorale interspersed with three canons and the last comprises a reprise of the chorale, a deflating alla marcia and final calm code.” [From An Annotated Guide to Wind Chamber Music by Rodney Winther.]

Quintett für Blasinstrumente Op. 52

Richard Schauer Music (T. Presser) /

Frankfurt: Zimmerman 28021

Recorded by the Moran Woodwind Quintet of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln School of Music on Crystal Records in 1994: Crystal Records CD753. Duration: 21:37. 4 Movements: Sehr frisch und feurig; Romanze: Sehr ruhig und innig; Leicht fliessend—Ausserst lebhaft; Finale: Sehr schwungvoll.

Although a 20th century work, this quintet is more in the style of the late 19th century: sort of a cross between Brahms and R. Strauss. It is a beautiful work and deserves to be performed much more often. Highly recommended for the advanced quintet. (We had to perform from copies of the out-of-print Zimmerman edition, available in libraries.) Since then Zimmerman has published a new edition. [Andrew Brandt]

Hot Air (1991)

Bryn Mawr, Pa.: Theodore Presser, 1993

Duration: 16:30. See http://www.victoriabond.com/

This work is based on Ms. Bond’s opera about the story of Gulliver’s Travels. According to the composer, “…this quintet elaborates dramatic scenes from the opera that I was working on at that time, Travels. The first movement, Hot Air, shows Gulliver in an agitated state, eager for the journey, impatient to begin; the second movement, Who Is Gulliver, finds him at a turning point, where he has lost his direction and his sense of identity; the third movement, In My Land, gives him a glimpse of a more perfect world of peace and harmony; the last movement, Yahoos, gives an unflattering portrait of humans as seen by a more advanced lifeform.”

Brant, Henry Dreyfuss (1913-2008)

Prevailing Winds, for woodwind quintet, spacially separated

New York: C. Fischer, 1975

Flute doubles on piccolo, also ad lib. parts for percussion and keyboard. Optional trombone may replace horn. The work should be performed with the players spatially separated, preferably with the performers unseen by the audience. The parts do not require rhythmic and tempo coordination. Inspired by the composer’s son “around the life and times of Linus Corragio Brant.” Like much of Brant’s music, it is unique. See also the related page of works with piano. Premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet.

Requiem in Summer (1934/1955)

New York: Carl Fischer, 1956 /

New York: American Composers Alliance

For woodwind quintet, originally for strings and woodwinds. Marked: N.Y.C. 1934, quintet version 1955. Duration: 10:00.

Windjammer (1969)

It’s not completely clear whether this work is for four winds or woodwind quintet, or whether the instrumentation is flexible. It was premiered by the Dorian Wind Quintet, however, in 1969. It was one of Brant’s first noted works for spatially separated players, which became a landmark of his later style.

Note should also be made for his quartet , A Requiem in Summer, for oboe, clarinet, horn and bassoon.

Whoopee in D Major (1938) for piccolo, flute, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, bassoon, contrabassoon, and 2 horns (double woodwind quintet)

New York: Carl Fischer (rental)

Duration: 4:15. A preview of the score is available at https://issuu.com/theodorepresser/docs/brant_whoopee_in_d-winds_score . Members of the Colorado State University Wind Ensemble do a creditable job performing this work, available on Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABO1jISY9F0

Although Henry Brant is associated mainly with avant-garde works with spatially separated musicians, this piece is a conventional, light, humorous piece originally intended to be an overture to a comic (or comic book?) opera. Imagine a Bach chorale excerpt maltreated as a polka, rumba and a galop, with circus interludes. Fun to listen to and perform. [Andrew Brandt]

As seen above, there is contention over Brod’s actual birth and death dates. The International Cyclopedia gives the second set of dates for the composer as does Secrist-Schmedes, but the Eastman Library and others use the first set of dates. Others mix the years in every combination. (Even the Library of Congress isn’t consistent.) All 3 works are recorded by the Albert Schweitzer Quintet on a CD released by DeutschlandRadio. Brockway, Howard (1870-1951)

At Twilight and An Idyl of Murmuring Water for double woodwind quintet

Unpublished?

It is difficult to piece together the history of these wind pieces. Brockway originally composed them as Two Piano Pieces, Op. 39, Nos. 1 and 2 respectively, circa 1911. (See the International Music Score Library Project for a copy of the piano versions.) Brockway appears to have arranged them for ten winds himself, for a series of concerts of the Georges Longy Club, performed on Nov. 27, 1913. The Club was an ensemble of ten wind musicians formed by oboist Georges Longy (brought from Paris to play in the Boston Symphony). The Longy Club promoted contemporary wind music, particularly French and American music, occasionally adding a pianist to the winds. Reviews in the two Boston papers about these two pieces were contradictory. I could find no online evidence of a score for the dectet ever being published. [Andrew Brandt]
