Brandt’s Woodwind Quintet List – Other Small Ensembles (Quartets, Other Trios & Miscellanea)

This page might be considered the Odds and Ends section of this website. It includes wind trios that are not included in the trio d’anche page as well as quartets, which fills in the empty repertoire spot between reed trios and woodwind quintets. I’ve also added miscellaneous works that I think should be of interest to woodwind and horn players, including works with strings. These works I felt were important to explore the development of wind playing in chamber music.

Some guidelines (not rules) I used in selecting works on this (and other) page(s):

1. For this page, I included works with at least 3 wind instruments that are found in a woodwind quintet. Most are trios and quartets, but this page also include a growing list of larger ensembles that may be interesting to quintet players.

2. I excluded chamber works that consist of a single instrument (say, trios of 3 bassoons).

3. Since one goal of this site is to explore the development of wind writing after the Baroque period, I excluded most (but not all) works of the Baroque period. (That could be a whole ‘nuther catalog.) I also included chamber works of mixed winds and strings that I felt contributed to the development of wind writing.

4. A large number of works on this page are for flute, clarinet and bassoon, or quartets of flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. I included some chamber works of these instruments with added strings, too.

5. This entire site, in general, does not include most works that are considered part of the Harmoniemusik tradition, which I think is a different compositional tradition from that of the woodwind quintet and other chamber music styles. There is unavoidable overlap, though, with smaller works of pairs of winds, as well as double woodwind quintets, which could be of either or both traditions.

6. Works with piano (or harpsichord or organ or even accordion) are included on the Winds and Keyboard page.

7. If a woodwind quintet composer also wrote for larger wind or mixed groups, (i.e. works for woodwind and strings, or woodwind and brass quintets), I generally grouped those works with their woodwind quintets, not on this page. However, if I found a good, similar work by a composer who did NOT write a woodwind quintet, it might be on this page. (This is a new guideline, though.) If you are looking for a specific mixed work, say, a septet for 4 winds and 3 strings, you might check both this page and the quintet pages. Someday I might have them all cross-referenced, but not soon.

8. I reserve the right to break all of these guidelines if I want to.

9. I shouldn’t have to remind people, but commentary that I (or others) wrote is covered under copyright and may not be used without permission. [You can tell I wrote it because I affixed my name to it.] Likewise, I include my own html code under copyright as well. You may not extract portions of my hard work of 45 years and call it your own! You may, however, use this site for academic research, in fact, it’s encouraged, with proper attribution. Academic and other writers should, at the very least, credit me for my work.

After listening to Bal y Gat’s quintet, his Don Quijote Suite and this quartet, one can easily tell that the Divertimento is the more substantial work of the two. It’s also much more adventurous harmonically than the Don Quijote suite. It might be attractive to the quartet looking for a change of pace. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Other Boccherini works with winds: Many works for flute with strings, including Sextets Op. 16, Nos. 1-6, catalogued as G. 461 to 466. Also many Quintets with Oboe or Flute with strings (Opuses 17, 19, 55, and others (catalogued as G. 419 through G. 444). Also, with horn: G. 471 (Op. 38, No. 5, also known as Divertimento Notturno No. 5) in E Major for 2 violins, viola, 2 cellos and horn. Also Sextet No. 6 G. 472 (Op. 38, No. 6)(1787) in B Major, for 2 violins, viola, cello, oboe and bassoon. Quartets, G. 264 for clarinet, flute, horn and bassoon (arr. Othon Van den Broek)

Paris: Bouillon, ca. 1825

Includes No. 1 in F Major, No. 2 in C Major, and No. 3 in D Minor. This series is a bit more problematic beacuse they do not appear to correspond to any of Boccherini’s other works, at least not the ones that we know about.

There is, obviously, much more scholarly research to be done on Boccherini’s works for strings and winds, with lots of opportunities for modern editing and new print editions. However, Boccherini’s writing for winds does not appear to have advanced the technical or musical development of the flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon or horn that much. (Maybe more scholarship could change that view.) For even more musicological mysteries, see the Rossini Quartets below. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Pneumatophores (2018) for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon and vibraphone

Wollongong, NSW, Australia: Wirripang https://www.australiancomposers.com.au/

The Flute, Oboe and Bassoon express the movement of birds, fish, crabs and people as they gather food in their bountiful habitat.”

De Bohun, Lyle (pseudonym for Boone, Clara Lyle)(1927-2015)

The Americas for flute, clarinet and bassoon

Washington, DC: Arsis Press, 1976

Composing under a male pseudonym started when Clara Lyle Boone was a student of Walter Piston at Harvard (and later with Darius Milhaud). She certainly gained visibility under her real name as a grandniece of Daniel Boone when she ran for Congress in Kentucky. In 1974 she launched Arsis Press, founded to publish chamber and sacred choral music of living women composers. [From Christine Ammer, Unsung: A History of Women in American Music.] An expansive memorial was written by Elizabeth Vercoe for the IAWM Journal which includes biographical info and many anecdotes of this remarkable woman. Today she probably would be known as a “Good Troublemaker.” [ Andrew Brandt ]

Einem, Gottfried von(1918-1996)

Serenade, von der Ratte, vom Biber un vom Baren (Serenade about the Rat, the Beaver and the Bear), Op. 84 for clarinet, bassoon and horn

Berlin: Bote & Bock (agent Boosey & Hawkes), 1989

Movements: I. Von der Ratte – Andante, nicht ohne verbrecherische Einsichten (not without criminal insight); II. Vom Biber – Allegro, capriziös, mit zarter Wehmut (capricious, with tender melancholy) (Für Harald Kunz); III. Vom Bären – Animato, mit leicht plebejischem Humor (with slightly plebeian humor).Premiered Dec. 11, 1988 in the Philharmonie Kammermusiksaal in Berlin by Peter Geisler, clarinet; Stefan Schweigert, bassoon and Stefan Jezierski, horn.

Program notes on the Boosey & Hawkes website (in German) explain that the reference to Bear was to Einem, himself, a nickname often used by his wife, Lotte Ingrisch. In turn, Einem referred to his wife as Rat (I’m not making any value judgements here). Beaver refers to Harald Kunz, a family friend and the person who commissioned this work on the composer’s 70th birthday. So the animal references are more biographical than part of a folk story or parable. Kunz also wrote the program notes on the B&H site. [translations by Google] [ Andrew Brandt ]

Octet, Op. 4 (1933) for clarinet, bassoon, horn, 2 violins, viola, cello and double bass

London: Hawkes & Son, Ltd. (Boosey & Hawkes, sole selling agent), 1934

“Ferguson was always a distinguished chamber musician and he first came to widespread attention through the publication of his First Violin Sonata (1931) and his Octet (1933), generally regarded as his most masterly work. The Octet was initially drafted as a quintet for clarinet and strings, but the canny [R. O.] Morris [Ferguson’s composition teacher], observing that there was no companion piece to share the scoring of the Schubert Octet, suggested that Ferguson recast it accordingly.” [From the Boosey & Hawkes website.]

Another online resource gives his year of death as 1975, which is a pretty big discrepancy. Much of Fiorillo’s life remains obscure after he was caught passing off other composer’s symphonic works as his own. So I cannot vouch for the authenticity of this work. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Gambaro, Vincent (Vincenzo)(1772 or 1785-1828?)

Wind Quartet in E Major, Op. 4, No. 1 for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon

Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com

Leipzig: Breitkopf & Härtel, 1810.

Movements: Allegro; Andantino; Polonaise. (A modern score for this quartet is available from the International Music Score Library Project, but curiously in another key. (See notes below.)

Gambaro was a clarinetist and printer, born in Genoa and he later settled in Paris. Although info is sketchy, he appears to have written as many as 24 quartets for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon, mostly arrangements of Beethoven, Haydn and possibly Mozart works. Even stranger, his name is variously given as Vincent Gambaro, Giovanni Battista Gambaro and Vincenzo Gambaro. Now these could be variations of the composer’s name, or they could be as many as three different people. Library cataloguing is sketchy for these works. Although the movements for this quartet are the same as those for Quartet No. 1 on themes of Haydn, listed below, they might be separate works. The Silvertrust has short excerpts of recordings of these movements and, although they are late Classical in style, they don’t sound particularly Haydnesque to these ears, but my knowledge of Haydn string quartets is sketchy at best. The publisher anticipates publishing the second and third quartets of Op. 4 in the future. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Quartet in F Major, Op. 4, No. 1 for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon

Budapest: Editio Musica, 1972

Here’s another mystery. Although the Silvertrust edition clearly lists Op. 4, No. 1 as being in E Major, the modern edition from the International Music Score Library Project is definitely written in F Major and the site doesn’t list any of the quartets in Op. 4 as being in E-flat major. (Catalog entries for the Editio Musica editions concur with the IMSLP info.) Yet, a recording of these quartets by the woodwind ensemble known as the Rossini Quartet, lists No. 1 as being in E Major, the second as C minor, and the third in F major, each a full step below the keys listed in the Editio Musica editions and the editions shared by the International Music Score Library Project. Yet, when I listen to the excerpt available of this recording, billed in E Major (on the Presto Music site) the work SOUNDS in F major, not E! But the same excerpt recorded on the Silvertrust website sounds a step lower. I cannot explain all the discrepancies here unless there are two versions of the same pieces in different keys, which doesn’t make a heckuva lot of sense. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Kreutzer, Conradin (Kreuzer)(1780-1849)

Grand Septet in E-flat Major, Op. 62 (ca. 1816) for clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello, and double bass

London: Musica Rara, 1966

Parts available for download from the International Music Score Library Project, https://imslp.org

With the same instrumentation, the same number of movements and sharing many of the same movement titles, Kreutzer’s Grand Septet is clearly modeled after Beethoven’s Septet of 1799-1800. Movements: 1. Adagio – Allegro; 2. Adagio; 3. Menuetto. Moderato; 4. Andante. Maestoso; 5. Scherzo. Prestissimo; 6. Finale. Allegro vivace. There are several recordings of this work available on YouTube. Maybe hoping for but not realizing the wild success of Beethoven’s Septet, Kreutzer also arranged the work as his String Quintet, Op. 62.

After a quick listening, this Septet might not have quite the flair of Beethoven’s Septet, but it does show off the capabilities of the wind instruments of the period and is a charming, virtuosic, Classical-Early Romantic work that should be much better known. Listen to one of the recordings, download the parts and, at least, give it a read through. Recommended. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Kreutzer, Rodolphe(1766-1831)

Trio in F Major for oboe or clarinet, viola and bassoon (or cello)

Dedicated “pour son ami Garnier L’Ainé.” Movements: Allegro; Adagio; Allegro.

Trio for oboe (or clarinet), bassoon and viola

Offenbach: J. André, ca. 1803

An “Elektronische Reproduktion” is available from the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek in Munich, Germany, created 2015. (Links available in WorldCat.) The only other copy I’ve located is at Brigham Young University, in Provo, Utah, USA, which hosts the Primrose International Viola Archive.

Rodolphe Kreutzer, a violinist and composer, is the performer that Beethoven dedicated his Violin Sonata No. 9, Op. 47, now known as the Kreutzer Sonata. Kreutzer wrote 40 operas and 19 violin concertos and was one of the top violin virtuosos of his day, so why he wrote this trio is a bit of a mystery. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Published as an “Original work discovered in 1910. Revised by Albert J. Andraud.” Andraud published it as by Mozart, but it is nearly identical to a work by Georg Lickl published in Vienna in 1798. Movements: Adagio; Menuetto–Trio–Coda; Polacca–Trio.

Although it sounds Classical, it doesn‘t quite sound Mozartean. It‘s a nice work, though. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Divertimento No. 1 for 2 clarinets and bassoon (2015)

New York: American Composers Alliance, https://composers.com/

Duration: 14:00 Movements: I. March; II. Waltz No. 1 and Trio; III. Andante Mosso; IV. Waltz No. 2 and Trio; V. Rondo and Fugue.

According to the composer: “Divertimento No. 1 for 2 clarinets and bassoon was composed while I was a student, on a Fulbright Grant, at the Vienna Academy of Music. It was inspired both by the 5 Divertimenti of Mozart for 2 clarinets and bassoon and by the neo-classical wind music of Igor Stravinsky. I revised the work in 2015.”

Divertimento No. 2 for 2 clarinets and bassoon (2015)

New York: American Composers Alliance, https://composers.com/

Movements: I. Parade; II. Waltz No. 1 and Trio; III. Pastorale; IV. Waltz No. 2 and Trio; V. Rondo.

The composer, again: “Divertimento No. 2 was composed while I was a member of the U.S. Air Force Band in Washington, D.C. I was a member of the band’s clarinet section and also composed and arranged for the band. We toured 2 months every year for the 4 years I was enlisted in the band, during the Vietnam War. This Divertimento, along with other pieces written at the same time, was something to keep us entertained and in practice while on the road. it contains some singular difficulties related to the clarinet.

Luening, Otto (1900-1996)

The Bass with the Delicate Air (1940) for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon

New York: Highgate Press; New York: Galaxy Music Corp., agents

Most sources list this as a quartet, dated 1940, for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon. However, some references list this as a woodwind quintet dated 1958. (The American Music Center says “quartet” 1974.) (No source lists 2 different versions.) So two or three versions of this work may exist. In any case, the original title was “Mr. Boogie-Woogie Goes for a Buggy Ride” (according to Cohn).

Murdock, Katherine Ann

Deployments (2013) for flute, clarinet, bassoon and 4 percussionists

Contact the composer: https://katherineannmurdock.com/

Duration: 20:00. Commissioned by bassoonist Stephanie Patterson. Premiered at the Iowa Celebration of Women Composers; University of Iowa; April 19, 2013.

The composer comments: “I composed Deployments in 2011-13 at the request of bassoonist Stephanie Patterson, who was interested in a piece that would challenge both concert performance conventions and audience expectations. During the course of the work the seven performers are deployed around the space in certain unexpected and changing ways which challenge their individual technical skills and abilities to work as an ensemble. They are also required to do things that they don’t normally do, such as clapping or sitting on the floor. The audience is an important factor in the overall arc of the composition. To reveal more would to be to spoil the surprise, but suffice it to say that I learned something important in writing this piece: there are a good reasons for the conventions of classical music performance, and thwarting these conventions is as much of a challenge for the composer as it is for the performers.”

Quartet (1994) for flute, clarinet, bassoon and harp

Contact the composer: https://www.liornavok.com/

Flute doubles on piccolo. Premiered in Tal Aviv by Ruty Itzcovitch-Eyal, flute/piccolo; El’ad Avakrat, clarinet; Eyal Streett, bassoon and Gittit Boasson, harp.

The composer’s notes: The Quartet for flute, clarinet bassoon and harp is influenced by impressionistic French music and Jazz, which was my main influence at the time. The first movement starts with a pastoral character, somewhat naive, but soon starts to raise some concerned thoughts, and so, ends dark. The second movement is a light flowing movement built on pentatonic scale theme. A Bassoon cadenza bridges between the second and the third movement, which is a long Passacaglia with lamento character. In the last movement, piccolo is used instead of flute. This movement opens with a fugue between the four instruments, which leads to a lyrical second theme followed by harp solo and ends with a “Grand Finale.”

København: Engstrøm & Sødring, 1966

København: Samfundet til udgivelse af dansk musik: Edition Dania, 1951

There seems to be confusion over whether this quartet is for flute, oboe, clarinet, and bassoon or for flute, oboe, horn and bassoon. The online score at http://www.edition-s.dk/music/knud%C3%A5ge-riisager/kvartet-op-40a clearly shows it to be all woodwinds. See the quartet below. The score states that this Divertimento is arranged from a woodwind quintet of 1932, but so far I’ve found no record of a Riisager woodwind quintet of 1932.

København: Engstrøm & Sødring, 1966

Kvartet for flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon (1932?)

It is possible that this is an incorrect catalogue entry for Op. 40a, above.

Variationer (Variations), Op. 4 (1923) for clarinet, bassoon and viola.

Copenhagen: Samfundet til udgivelse af dansk music, 1977

In brief, if you have a good clarinetist, a good bassoonist, and a good violist, by all means perform this work. You won’t regret it. There are a few sections (with the grace notes) that remind you of the first movement of Nielsen’s Quintet, which hadn’t been written yet. So was Nielsen imitating Riisager or were they both imitating some traditional folksong? [ Andrew Brandt ]

Rossini, Gioachino (or Gioacchino) (1792-1868)

6 Quartets for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn (arr. Friedrich Berr, edited by Walter Zachert)

Mainz, New York: Schott, 1936 (edited by Walter Zachert)

Boca Raton, Florida: Masters Music (199?) (in 2 volumes)

A copy of the Schott edition is available for download in those countries where the copyright has expired from the International Music Score Library Project, as well as an edition of Rossini’s original composition for strings and several recordings. And a few other original works and arrangements, which are jumbled together. There are also a variety of recordings available for these pieces.

These light wind quartets have a convoluted history that rivals the plot twists of some of Rossini’s opera librettos, so we present this discussion with musical cues from Rossini operas. (Act I. CUE: English horn solo of William Tell Overture.) First, 12-year-old Gioacchino was spending the summer of 1804 in Agostino Triossi’s villa in Conventello with some friends who played violin, cello and bass. So, for fun, he wrote six Sonate a quattro for this foursome (Rossini played 2nd violin). (Now CUE: Overture to La Gazza Ladra – The Thieving Magpie.) Mysteriously, in 1826, five of these six works were anonymously transcribed for standard string quartet (without the third of the original set of 6, which was probably omitted because of the importance of string bass in that quartet). We don’t know for sure who arranged them, but seeing as Rossini probably was the only person with a copy of the originals, either he arranged them or he allowed somebody to copy the parts. (CUE: “Largo et factotum della citta” from The Barber of Seville.) Enter clarinettist Walter Berr (1796-1838) who played in the orchestra in Rossini’s Theatre Italien in Paris. Berr, in 1828, arranged these five 1826 string quartet pieces for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn. Since the wind arrangements were based on those five standard string quartet arrangements, and Berr wanted to issue a full set of six quartets, he added a new No. 6 which appears to have been taken from an 1812 Rossini wind quartet for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn in F Major, an “Andantine e Tema con variazioni.” (If this provenance is correct — and that is a substantial IF — No. 6 would be the only piece in the set that Rossini actually wrote for winds.) The Schott edition and various later editions are based on these wind arrangements. Unknown to the other characters in our story, Rossini secretly kept the original, unpublished music (for 2 violins, cello and bass) in his possession and, in 1873, five years after he died, his widow, Olympe Pélissier, gave the manuscripts to a friend and they were almost lost to posterity. (CUE: search and discovery scenes from La Cenerentola.) Somehow (and this is another unresolved plot twist), these manuscripts ended up in America and they were discovered in the Library of Congress by Alfredo Casella in 1951. So Rossini’s original six pieces were first published in their original form in 1954 and it was now possible to hear the originals for the first time since 1804. This was important to the creation of a wind quartet No. 6b, listed below, where this story continues….

Movements: Allegro spiritoso; Andante assai; Rondo.

Quartet No. 6 in F Major for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn

Kassel, New York: Bärenriter, 2008

Movements: Andante; Theme with Variations; Finale.

As mentioned above in our commentary, this movement is NOT one of the string works that Rossini wrote in 1804, but appears to be based a separate work from 1812, originally scored for flute, clarinet, horn and bassoon. So of the six quartets, this would be the only one originally conceived for wind instruments. But keep reading below ….

Quartet [No. 6] in F Major for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn (revused abd edited by Richard Franko Goldman)

Quartet No. 6b in F Major for flute, clarinet, bassoon and horn (arr. Gaetano Ferlazzo)

Tallevast, Florida: TrevCo Music

Movements: Allegro; Andante; Moderato.

…(CUE: Finale, Act I of Il barbiere di Siviglia.) Continuing the strange saga of these wind quartets that we started above, this new wind quartet, now numbered 6b, is actually based on Rossini’s original Quartet No. 3 for 2 violins, cello and bass, the one that was never arranged for standard string quartet, and thus never arranged for winds in the original set of six wind quartets. This new wind quartet is based on Rossini’s original music that was not discovered until 1951 in a collection donated to the Library of Congress in Washington, DC. In a final plot twist, Gaetano Ferlazzo, after studying Frederic Berr’s arrangements, took the heretofore missing Quartet #3 and arranged that for wind quartet, listing it as #6b (because #6 was not part of Rossini’s youthful works.). [See the Trevco-Varner website: https://www.trevcomusic.com/ and search for Rossini Quartet no. 6b for their version of this story.] So, if you want to present all six quartets by the young Rossini as he envisioned them (except, obviously, for the instrumentation), this would be the version to use. You could even put this piece third if you wanted to restore the original order. But, if you prefer the music to the “Andante and Theme with Variations’ you can use the “original” six quartets for winds. Or you could perform all 7 quartets in a veritable orgy of Rossini nostalgia. Your final option is to make up your own random selection of these quartets, soak up as much Rossini as you can possibly stand, and leave it to the audience to sort out. (CUE: ending of William Tell Overture.) And thus, ladies and gentlemen, we end our little operatic story, and our entire cast of characters takes their curtain calls to tumultuous applause. [ Andrew Brandt ]

A Greek violinist and composer who went to Berlin and eventually studied with Schoenberg, he developed a personal 12-tone style using multiple tone rows in the same work. He returned to Greece and eventually wrote in atonal, dodecaphonic and tonal styles there, but he was generally unappreciated by the public. In spite of his obscurity, there is an International Feinberg – Skalkottas Society which does have a fairly lengthy biography on Skalkottas, although you have to search to find it.

Trio for Flute, Oboe and Bassoon (1987)

Arts Aeturnum Productions, 2017

Available at International Music Score Library Project with non-commercial, performance restricted attribution.

Movements: 1. Moderato; 2. Allegro.Duration: 5:00.

The composer wrote: “I like woodwinds very much. Never understood why the French horn is part of a woodwind quintet (of which, however, I have written three!). Also the clarinet (a somewhat later development) can get a bit gooey sounding (great when you want it). But the flute and double-reeded oboe and bassoon have a special charm. So, in 1987 I wrote such a piece. What I especially like about this combination is that it doesn’t blend well (say like a string quartet), so writing chordal sort of music (which I rarely do anyway) would be counterproductive. Now if you glance at these two movements you will never (or rarely) see the instruments playing the same rhythms. Movement 1 dances along contrapuntally, and is gay and light and fun. Not so with movement 2, which is quite acerbic with jabbing staccatos abounding in all parts… not that it doesn’t have a certain charm.” [W. Jay Sydeman, from International Music Score Library Project]

Octet in B Major, Op. 72 (ca. 1870) for clarinet, horn, bassoon, 2 violins, viola, cello and bass

This work uses the same instrumentation as Schubert’s Octet. Movements: 1. Poco adagio–Allegro non troppo; 2. Intermezzo, un poco vivace; 3. Adagio molto mesto; 4. Scherzo, Allegro vivace; 5. Allegro moderato. Although ii only uses three wind instruments, it is a good example of Romantic chamber music repertoire that showcases wind instruments, and a good change of pace for wind chamber players. Plus, it should be a fun piece to perform.

From the Forest of Chimneys (1991), Octet for clarinet in A, bassoon, horn, violin, 2 violas, cello and double bass

Contact the composer: https://joellewallach.com/

Written for a New York Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble. Movements: I. Fiercely and Bitterly Staggering; II. Metallic; III. Lonotano doloroso; IV. Lontano. Duration: 16:40. Recorded by the Milken Archive of Jewish Music, Vol. 19, Album 3. A recording of the 4th movement is available for listening on the composer’s website.

The composer explains: “From the Forest of Chimneys is an extended lyrical work for eight instruments, each with an equally crucial and characteristic solo role. The work took shape on my 1991 trip to Poland. On a dark, misty day, I visited the site of the Birkenau extermination camp. When the Nazis realized that the Russians would advance through Poland, they attempted to eliminate evidence of their inhumane activities by bombing the Birkenau crematoria and gas chambers and setting fire to the barracks. All that now remains, as far as the eye can see, is a forest of chimneys stretching to the horizon. From the watchtower near the camp’s entrance, I looked out on that forest of chimneys, and on the spirals of mist curling up around one another, intertwining and dispersing like the truncated songs of the many victims whose lives had been cut short in that tragic place. These curling helices of song and mist are the central image of From the Forest of Chimneys. The work was completed during the summer and fall of 1991 at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts and in New York City. It is in four movements, each subdivided into long lyrical sections. In each section, the characteristic extended melodies unfold as they pass seamlessly from one instrumental voice to another. As each instrument yields the melodic line, its voice assumes a supporting role and the motives come to be tinted differently. The timbre is thus refracted into subtle coloristic differentiations as the material is passed among the players.

Octet in D Major, Op. 7 (1849, rev. 1863) for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon, violin, viola, cello and bass

Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com

The Silvertrust music publishing company has recently issued a good number of reprints of 19th century chamber works for winds and strings. From the recording excerpts available on their website, this Octet appears to be a particularly virtuosic and attractive work, a piece I wish I had the opportunity to perform myself. A notable African-American composer, he went from humble beginnings to a doctorate in music, to founding the first electronic music program at Oberlin College, to chairing the Music School at the University of California in Berkeley, to commissions by the Chicago Symphony, the Boston Symphony, and the New York Philharmonic—an outstanding career in education and composition. Octet in E Major for violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, bassoon and 2 horns

Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com

Movements: Allegro; Adagio; Rondo allegretto.

In his day, Winter was one of Europe’s favorite composers, but he’s little remembered today. A violinist, it is surprising (and gratifying) that he wrote an octet where the winds outnumbered the string players. I add this work to the list as one of those Romantic works I wish I had performed when the opportunity was there. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Witt, Friedrich(1770-1836)

Septet (ca. 1816?) in F Major for clarinet, horn, bassoon, 2 violins, viola, cello, bass,

Edition Silvertrust, http://www.editionsilvertrust.com

First of all, yes, this is billed at a septet but is scored for 8 players. However, the original title was “Septetto pour Clarinette, Cor, Basson, 2 Violons, Alto e Basse.” In the score, the bottom strings share a part and the publisher suggests the work can be performed with either cello or bass, or with both. Also, there is difference of opinion over the date of composition, with some arguing for 1797 and others much later. (1797 seems unlikely because it would predate Beethoven”s 1802 Septet, which caused many other composers to write septets for similar instrumentations.) It was published in 1817 which, at least, defines the range of possible dates. Movements: 1. Adagio–Allegro maestoso; 2. Adagio cantabile; 3. Menuetto; 4. Allegretto. The Silvertrust edition is based on (cleaned up) original parts of the first publication of the Septet.
