Brandt’s Trios d’Anche (Reed Trio) List
Wait, this is a woodwind quintet site. What are reed trios doing here?
The purpose of this entire website is to explore woodwind literature, particularly woodwind quintets and works for winds and piano. But as the main quintet content has expanded to include some ensembles up to double woodwind quintets, it seemed worthwhile to look at some smaller ensembles. Other than wind quintets, my favorite chamber ensemble in school was the trio d’anche, which is the French term for reed trio coined by Fernand Oubradous who founded the Trio d’anches de Paris. (You will see the names “Oubradous,” and “Trio d’anches de Paris” frequently below.) The genre was first popularized by French composers in the early 20th century. Many other composers around Europe, the Americas, and Australia have since adopted the ensemble.
The trio d’anche tradition is quite different from the quintet tradition (which is itself, quite different from the harmoniemusik tradition for winds, too). Although there are a number of quintet-writing composers who have also written trios d’anches, the two lists, surprisingly, turned out to be fairly distinct.

What’s In This List
This page is mainly for trios written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, plus a few other combinations, such as 2 oboes and English horn, oboe and 2 bassoons, and the like. Unlike other lists, I also include some arrangements and some reed-trio-friendly works (for example, for reed trio and voice). Some works have options such as substituting flute for oboe. I have excluded reed trios where all all three instruments are the same (with one exception). So far, this list includes over 650 composers with over 950 titles.
In concert with recent scholarship on women composers, this list highlights their names with a different-colored background.

The opening page of the score on the composer’s website (arthuraharonian.fr) clearly gives the scoring as “Hautbois, Cor anglais and Basson” but it is also listed for clarinet instead of English horn. Whichever instrumentation that was used, it was premiered on June 27, 2010, by l’Ensemble Trielen in the Eglise de Notre Dame d”Espé à Paris. Duration: 5:30.11

According to the composer: The first movement, Seaside Sarabande, is based on the Baroque fugue with the instruments joining one another in a playful dance at the seashore. The second movement, a duet, calls for the lower voices of the flute and clarinet (alto flute and bass clarinet) titled “Lament to Sara” (dedicated to my friend who recently passed away whose name happened to be Sara – as in Sarabande). The final movement returns to the melodic voicing of the first movement with a triplet feel describing Rolling Waves.

The cover discription of the trio’s performance options gives so many substitutions for other instruments that it seems like almost anything except a trio d’anche. But a look at the actual score confirms that the primary orchestration is for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, although it includes an alternate horn part to be used in lieu of a bassoon. After all that, the score shows the piece to be light, simple, and short. (The bassoon part is so simple that the bassoonist would probably be happy to offer a hornist their chance at the work.) These are 3 short-ish fugues on decidedly non-Bachian themes. The first two are old seafaring popular songs and the final based on the “snake charmer’s” song (which I have no idea of the origin of). Not a ‘serious’ work, but lightly humorous and entertaining for a non-serious concert or if your trio needs to demonstrate how a fugue works. The English Wikipedia article on Arrieu offers a description of each movement of the Trio: “The opening Allegretto ritmico is a swaggering mock march, with contrasting, nostalgic episodes. Initially the Pastorale et Scherzo is tender and swaying; the 3-time continues, faster and cheekily, and includes its own ‘middle section’. The Final, Allègrement, emulates the military manner, even in 3-time; then comes a ‘proper’, 4-time, steadier parade. [Arrieu’s] wittiness is mischievous, producing teasingly foiled expectations in a mildly anarchic manner.”

If you were a Parisian composer looking for exposure in the early 20th century you most likely joined one or more of the many composer societies who helped arrange performances and even, sometimes, commissions. Active as a composer as well as a writer on music, Georges Auric first belonged to Les Nouveaux Jeunes, which evolved into Les Six, and he later joined La Sérénade, which received backing from aristocratic families in Paris. The programming committee for the group included Auric, Darius Milhaud, Francis Poulenc and Henri Sauguet. Two popular trio d’anches were premiered on a single La Sérénade concert on Tuesday, November 29, 1938: Auric’s trio and Milhaud’s Suite d’après Corrette. [See Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios” for history, analysis and a score for both works.] ¶ It seems ironic that Auric was writing for concerts sponsored by Parisian aristocrats, as he was beginning to become active in Leftist, populist politics. His populism reached into his music via the rejection of traditional schools of music (from German Romanticism to Impressionism) to using popular music styles, including jazzy rhythms and harmonies as well as circus and dance hall styles in his music. In that respect, Auric’s Trio represented a revolutionary fervor that is almost incomprehensible to today’s audiences. Nevertheless, modern performers and audiences can still appreciate the light humor, parody, dance rhythms, insoucience and joie de vivre of this trio. [ Andrew Brandt ]

As with several other Parisian composers on this list, Barraud was a member of the musical Triton society, for which he premiered this trio on April 29, 1936. Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios” offers a detailed analysis and a much-needed edited score of this (and other) works as part of her dissertation.
Henri Barraud is not well-known outside France. Recordings of this work are rare and at this moment there is only one live performance available on Youtube (or elsewhere online). Unlike trios by Milhaud, Ibert, and Auric, this work features more complicated cross-rhythms with quick changes, making coordination between voices much more of a challenge. This is seen especially in the finale, where 6 or 4 or 3 against 5 rhythms in a single beat are common. Also, Barraud eschews the diverting folk- and dance-melodies of his compatriots, requiring more careful listening by audiences, too. I would not say that rhythmic accuracy is everything in this work, but it is an essential foundation that must be tackled before interpreting it. Not a work for amateur groups, in my opinion. Cynthia Kay Wolverton in her doctoral dissertation, “The Contributions of Armenian Composers to the Clarinet Repertoire… (University of North Texas, 2002) quotes notes from the recording: “The humorous title and light spiritedness of the music is intended to project a happy mood to the listener. It is music not meant to be taken too seriously, but to be simply fun to listen to. The composer also wanted to capitalize on the virtuosity of the three musicians for whom the piece was written. Compositionally, the work is based on two very short motives: one rhythmic and one melodic, which are stated at the beginning by the oboe. These two ideas are then subjected to transformations and variations.”

According to Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios”, Ferroud was the founder of the Triton society – one of several Parisian collectives to promote new music. The concerts produced by the society were well-attended by other composers and critics, including Jacques Ibert and several other composers who soon wrote their own trio d’anches. ¶ Ferroud’s Trio en Mi was the first work dedicated to the Trio d’anches de Paris. The ensemble premiered the work on January 22, 1934 and gave repeat performances for festivals in Strassburg, Algiers, Bourges and Salzburg. The ensemble also recorded the work in 1937. Between the touring and the recording, this work helped ensure the Trio d’anches de Paris an international following. So Ferroud, in a way, started the popular movement that resulted in this entire list of over 700 works.
The recording of Ferroud’s Trio made by the Trio d’anches de Paris in the 1930s, available on YouTube, is instructive both in how the Parisian winds interpret the work (often loosely in terms of rhythm) and the perils of early recording technology, including significant distortion in the bass, and the vicissitudes of recording (apparently) the entire work in one take. Fortunately, you can contrast that with the much more modern recording by Trio Lézard which redeems the work, although you need to search for each movement separately on YouTube. [ Andrew Brandt ]

This is the original version with clarinet in A. The Concert Suite is also listed as Trio in B Minor. Movements: Allegro agitato; Andante; Intermezzo; Finale. Duration: 11:30. ¶ It is worth it to go to the International Music Score Library Project and look up Ange Flégier just to see the photo of his magnificent moustache and bow tie. ¶ Although the trio is listed in a few places as in D minor, a quick peek at the score looks like B minor to me (with occasional modulations to D Major and B Major). (It is quite possible that the Hymie Voxman arrangement – see below – is transposed to D minor. I cannot confirm that without that score.)
I recently came a across an excellent recording of the Concert Suite on YouTube, performed The Ars Spiritum Trio (Lavinia Opriş, oboe; Alexandra Stanciu, bassoon and Sebastian Antoneac, clarinet), the only complete recording I’ve heard. To my ears, the compositional style harks backwards to late Romantic wind writing rather than forward to 20th century Paris, with long, lyrical melodic lines spread among all three players, yet challenging fast work as well. For experienced quintet players, it is closer to the aesthetic of Ludwig Thuille’s Sextet than to the quintets of Ibert and Milhaud, making it a unique work in the trio d’anche repertoire. Highly recommended. ¶ Flégier’s Concert Suite was one of the first works for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, written three decades before the Trio d’anches de Paris was founded in 1927. The first was probably by George Pfeiffer . (But also see Mangold and Charles Huguenin.) Flegier would seem to be a significant composer, but Grove Music Online doesn’t even list him. As with many of Françaix’s other works for winds, the Divertissement has his trademark puckish humor and cross-rhythms, in this case largely with the bassoon playing 3 against 2 and 4 or 5 against 3, as if he/she were fighting with the other members, then suddenly returning to peaceful rhythmic coexistence. ¶ Arguably, the Divertissement doesn’t have the insoucience or the manic energy of his woodwind quintet, but it is a challenge to any trio d’anche to perform, requiring musicality, rhythmic security, and endurance. Trautonien or Trautoniums were monophonic electronic instruments invented in 1929 which the player pressed a string against an electronic plate, moving left or right to change pitch. Hindemith apparently intended the work for three of these electronic instruments pitched low, medium and high. The Schott edition renders the work to be performed also by winds (oboe, clarinet and bassoon) or strings. Movements: 1. Langsam; 2. Langsam; 3. Mäßig bewegt; 4. Breit; 5. Mäßig schnelle Achtel; 6. Lebhaft; 7. Langsam. Duration: 11:23. The score is available also in those countries where the copyright has expired from the International Music Score Library Project.
YouTube (https://youtu.be/k0UA0-heeFo) has a recording of the electronic version (with scrolling score) which does have a haunting quality to it. Listening to the work suggests that it would also be possible to use English horn or contrabassoon or other substitutions for certain movements. There are some low A’s and a low A to B trill, which does make things awkward for the bassoonist. Altogether, it’s an unorthodox but intriguing option for a trio d’anche concert. [ Andrew Brandt ]

To these ears, this work seems Webernesque. The longest movement is 1:45. The moods of the movements range from soothing harmonies to aggressive pointillistic atonality. On quick listening, it appears the last movement largely reprises the first. Overall, this trio sounds like it would be an interesting challenge for the players, although it might leave some audiences unsatisfied. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Although the International Music Score Library Project dates its publication of these two works as 1910, it’s also listed as a Second Edition. The original was published in 1896, according to the French-language version of Wikipedia, and this is consistent with his other opus numbers. Both trios were composed the same year in Switzerland, long before the Trio d’anches de Paris was formed. These two works are among the earliest trio d’anches created.

Ibert dedicated this trio to Fernand Oubradous and the Trio d’Anches de Paris who recorded the work in 1937 (see below). Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios” has a full analysis of the work, including notational problems (and corrections) through her study of both the recording by the Trio d’anches de Paris and the original manuscript with penciled notes by bassoonist Fernand Oubradous. ¶ Dr. McGee Stockwell also offers the tidbit that the first known performance of this trio was at a Triton society concert on April 12, 1937, by the Trio d’anches de Paris (paired with another trio by Jacques Rivier, his Petite Suite). This may or may not have been the premier performance. Coming roughly two years after its composition, it is possible the work was performed earlier by the Trio d’anches de Paris, but not noted in the press or archived printed programs. We do know that the Cinq Pièces en Trio was the first piece to be recorded by the Trio d’anches de Paris on the Oiseaux Lyre recording label, but only 3 of the movements were included on the 2 sides of the 78 rpm recording. The two other movements were recorded on the Pathé label. This may have been less strange than it sounds, since the earlier Oiseaux Lyre recordings were actually made and pressed in the Pathé recording studios.)
Although not the first trio d’anche dedicated to the Trio d’anches de Paris (that would be Pierre-Octave Ferroud’s Trio en mi of 1933), and certainly not the first written for the combination, Ibert’s Cinq Pièces en Trio appears to have been the first trio d’anche commissioned and published by l’Oiseaux Lyre and remains one of the most popular works for the medium. Like Ibert’s woodwind quintet, it is light, effervescent, well crafted, and very French. [ Andrew Brandt ]

This work is a reconstruction. The first movement is from a holograph. The second and third movements are arrangements from “April-Preludes” (Dubnová preludia) for piano, her most famous work, arranged by Stéphane Egeling.
Despite her untimely death at age 25, Kaprálová produced a body of work that still inspires interest. This is her only work for winds. The Kapralova Society, named after her, promotes women composers and, more generally, women’s rights. [ Andrew Brandt ]

I’m not sure whether this qualifies as a real trio d’anche, since it is primarily an oboe solo with accompaniment, but it is the earliest original work I’ve found specifically scored for oboe, clarinet and bassoon (not arranged). ¶ If you define a trio d’anche as any work for oboe, clarinet and bassoon, then you would probably call this the first work of the genre. However, if you define a trio d’anche as a chamber work for oboe, clarinet and bassoon where all the voices are treated equally and virtuosically, I would give Georges Pfeiffer the nod for the first true trio d’anche, even though it was probably written after Mangold’s death. This work was premiered by members of the Trio d’anches de Paris on a recital for the composer society La Sérénade on November 29, 1938, which also featured the premiere of Auric’s Trio for oboe, clarinet and bassoon. The Trio d’anches de Paris also recorded the work on the Oiseau-Lyre label. For much more information, a complete analysis of the trio including examining how Milhaud used Corrette’s music in his work, and a reconstituted score with corrections, see Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios”. (If you wish to do your own comparison, a modern edition of Corrette’s Pièces pour musette, No. 1 is available from Amadeus Press.) There are many good performances of this work on YouTube but I’m now partial to a live performance by the Olmos Ensemble (Paul Lueders, oboe; Ilya Shterenberg, clarinet; and Sharon Kuster, bassoon).
This work is based on music Milhaud wrote as incidental music for a French language production of Roméo et Juliette, performed in Paris earlier in 1937, also for oboe, clarinet and bassoon. (A few sources erroneously attribute this music to Milhaud’s incidental music for Jules César, composed in 1936.) ¶ The trio (and the earlier music for Roméo et Juliette) pays homage to French composer, Michel Corrette (1707-1795), using material from Corrette’s Pièces pour musette, no. 1 according to Milhaud scholar, Barbara Kelly (in Tradition and Style in the Works of Darius Milhaud 1912-1939). ¶ In a personal note, this Suite and Ibert’s trio were my introduction to trios d’anches. The Minuets curiously show Milhaud’s penchant for polytonal writing, even with only three players. [ Andrew Brandt ]
Incidental music to Roméo et Juliette, Op. 161 or 161a (1937) for oboe, clarinet and bassoon
This is the source of the music used for Milhaud’s Suite d’après Corrette, Op. 161b, which according to Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios”, was also performed by the Trio d’anches de Paris. ¶ The music was written for a French language production of Romeo and Juliet, performed at the Théâtre de Mathurins in Paris. A student of early French music, Milhaud chose music of Michel Corrette (1707-1795), reworking Corrette’s melodies and harmonies to create an ancient ambience. Obviously, the combination of 18th century French Baroque music with an English Renaissance play reworked into a 20th century context seems odd today. However, Milhaud worked closely with the director and the tranlator (Georges Pitoëff) to time portions of his music to line up with stage action. So the close collaboration likely overcame any objections of historical purity. A French-speaking musicologist would do many of us a favor by finding, publishing and comparing the theater score with the later trio. [ Andrew Brandt ]
Incidental music for La Duchesse d’Amalfi, Op. 160 (1937) for oboe, clarinet and bassoon
Written the same year as Milhaud’s music for Roméo et Juliette, the music for La Duchesse d’Amalfi (Henri Fluchère’s adaptation of the English play by John Webster) shares the same instrumentation of oboe, clarinet and bassoon. (One would assume that the Trio d’anches de Paris also performed in this production, but I’ve not found any documentation to confirm that.) The reason for the unusual scoring may be simply that both theatrical productions were written in the middle of the Depression and there were no financial resources to hire more musicians for these dramatic works. The fact that Milhaud scored both of these works for reed trio must show Milhaud’s attraction to the sound of the ensemble and possibly his friendship with the members of the Trio d’anches de Paris. Clearly there is much more research to be done in this area, including distribution of the original, unpublished scores. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Fernand Oubradous was a well-known and respected bassoonist and conductor in France and one of the founders of the Trio d’Anches de Paris in 1927 (along with Myrtil Morel, oboist [1889-1979] and Pierre Lefèbvre, clarinetist [dates unknown]) which popularized the medium. The more one studies French wind music of the early 20th century, the more one realizes that Mssr. Oubradous seems to have known everybody associated with French classical music at the time. ¶ When the Trio d’anches de Paris was created, Oubradous also wrote a series of arrangements of Mozart Divertissements for the use of the ensemble, which are included in the complete trios of L’Oiseaux-lyre. ¶ Oubradous also briefly taught one of my bassoon teachers, Mordechai Rechtman, who used some of Oubradous’s materials in his teaching. This is probably the same Musette trio that is published in the Andraud 22 Woodwind Quintets collection. ¶ According to Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios”, this work was featured on a program of April 3, 1879, on one of Paul Taffanel’s Société de musique de chambre pour instruments à vent concerts, thus likely making it the very first true work for trio d’anche. (But also see Mangold.)

The work consists of one movement, although it seems likely a longer work was considered. The first performance of the Andante was on Nov. 30, 1937, by the Trio d’Anches de Paris, by Myrtil Morel, oboist; Pierre Lefèbvre, clarinetist, and Fernand Oubradous, bassoonist. Translation of the French title could be “Andante of An Incomplete Trio d’Anches,” but Google Translate gives the much more entertaining “Andante from a trio of uncompleted Reeds.”

The Trio is dedicated to the trio d’anches René Daraux, which recorded it for the Oiseaux Lyre label. This trio was premiered in Paris on March 27, 1927 at a concert of the Société modern des instruments à vent. Schulhoff uses elements of swing, jazz and other popular dances in this work. ¶ Erwin Schulhoff had an impressive list of musical mentors, teachers and friends throughout Europe and was a progressive composer, pianist and teacher. But after being vilified by the Nazi regime and finally sent to a concentration camp to be killed, his music became little known or performed until recently. Wikipedia (English) has a very good article about this composer, as does Grove Music Online. The Divertissement is one of only a handful of works written for oboe, clarinet and bassoon before the creation of the Trio d’anche de Paris in 1927. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Duration: 9:00. Written for Third Rail. While writing the work during a cold Chicago winter, the composer thought nostagically about the hot Santa Ana winds in southern California, also known as the Devil Winds. A score excerpt and a recording (incomplete) is available on the composer’s website.
In a quick listening of the incomplete sound file, the work starts aggresively, has a poignant middle section, and returns to a busy urban aesthetic. About as far away from the style of the early French trio d’anche works as you can get. I recommend you take a look. [ Andrew Brandt ]

These works could be performed by a wide variety of ensembles, including a trio d’anche. Members of the Trio di bassetto (credited with the arrangements) were Jean-Claude Veilhan, Eric Lorho, and Jean-Louis Gauch.
Anton Stadler and his brother Johann (1755-1804) were the leading clarinetists and basset-hornists in late-eighteenth century Vienna and were significantly responsible for popularizing the (relatively new) clarinet in solo, orchestral, harmoniemusik and chamber music — just in time for the creation and popularizing of the woodwind quintet. Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet and his Clarinet Concerto were both written for Anton. Anton eventually died from tuberculosis, a cruel end for any wind player. [ Andrew Brandt ]

This Trio was written by Villa-Lobos in 1921 in Rio de Janeiro. When he travelled to Paris in 1923, he brought the score with him and the Trio was premiered in Paris on April 9, 1924 by the French trio of Louis Gaudard, oboe; Gaston Hamelin, clarinet; and Gustave Dherin, bassoon. [See the article about Villa-Lobos’ Quintet on this website for more info on his years in Paris.] So this work is one of a handful that precedes the creation of the ensemble Trio d’Anches de Paris. In 1924, this work was cutting-edge modern and had it’s detractors, including composer Georges Auric who described the trio as “grimacing… a painful mixture of clichés of ‘modernism.” [Quoted by Catherine McGee Stockwell in “The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios”] Today, Villa-Lobos’s Trio remains one of the more rewarding works on this page and, while both this work and Auric’s are still performed, this is the more adventurous, exotic, and challenging. Walthew’s Triolet in E♭ appears to have been written not for the Trio d’anches de Paris but in spite of it; and it was a long time before another British composer wrote another work for oboe, clarinet and bassoon. A pianist, teacher and composer, Walthew studied with Hubert Parry at the Royal College of Music and was a close friend to classmate Ralph Vaughan Williams. As a composer, however, he seems to have had early high expectations that he later never quite matched. Online, I’ve only found a recording of the first movement of the triolet, performed by an amateur ensemble. ¶ Compared with the works by the French avant garde that make up most of the early trio d’anche literature, Walthau’s style is steadfastly conservative. On a trio d’anche concert, however, the Triolet might provide a charming contrast to the pervasive French virtuosic style of the time. ¶ Mention can also be made of Walthew’s Prelude and Fugue of 1945, originally for strings but also transcribed for two clarinets and bassoon, recorded by The Trio Pleyel. The researcher of specialized lists, such as those for woodwind quintets or trio d’anches, always stands on top of the shoulders of those who went before him or her. Here are some of the sources I used to create this trio d’anches list:
WorldCat – the international music library catalog is a wonderful resource for researching printed and recorded music. Once requiring expensive institutional subscriptions, it now can be accessed for free.
About a year after I started seriously researching trio d’anches, I stumbled upon Jacqueline Therese Bretz’s doctoral thesis “The Reed Trio: Analysis of Works by Ibert, Françaix and Schreiner with a Representative Repertoire List.” It was submitted in 2013. Now known as Dr. Bretz-Eichorn, she generously makes the work available for free online and it is an excellent resource.
Therese Bretz-Eichorn herself acknowledges the 1971 work by James Gillespie, “The Reed Trio: An Annotated Bibliography of Original Published Works” for reed trios written between 1897 and 1968, but the work doesn’t appear to be online or in print anymore.
Another useful doctoral thesis is The Oiseau-Lyre Wind Trios: A Critical Study of Interpretations Documented in Sound Recordings by Catherine McGee Stockwell, who discusses the early days of the trio d’anche, the Trio d’Anches de Paris, and the Oiseaux Lyre printing and recording company, with analysis of specific works. Ms. (now Doctor) McGee Stockwell makes extensive use of French reference resources in her research not available in English, making this resource even more valuable. You can download the thesis, as a PDF, here.
Grove Music Online combines The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians as well as its publications on Opera, Women composers, and probably a few other sources. Unfortunately, it doesn’t have an article on “trio d’anches,” but lots of repertoire lists by composers, which I use as jumping off points to find more information on trios, woodwind quintets and other ensembles.
The Wikipedia article “Reed Trio” lists a large number of trios d’anches sorted by nationality. Many of the listings link to other articles on composers on Wikipedia. It is possible to spend many hours (or days) threading through Wikipedia from here. In general, Wikipedia’s value as a music research tool has improved exponentially in the past 15 years.
The Bundesakademie für Musikalische Jugendbildung Trossingen has a Repertoireverzeichnis or repertoire list of works for 2 to 9+ winds, which was completed in 1998. (The digitized PDF apparently was created in 2007, but I didn’t discover it until almost 2020). It covers a wide variety of ensembles, but I did find a small number of trio d’anches not listed in other resources. (There are a few mistakes, too, just as there probably are in this list.) Wind players and researchers ought to download this list and keep it in their digital bag of tricks. It is in German, not English, but as one of my grad-school music history professors, Dr. Walter Kaufmann at Indiana University, once facetiously yelled at his class (with appropriate accent), “Why do you need a translation? It’s in German.”
Hundreds of composer websites were checked looking for trio d’anches, too. When appropriate, I offer the web addresses, too. (Since these web addresses change quickly and frequently, I don’t offer many live links because Google tends to heavily penalize web sites with out-of-date links. But you can easily copy and paste them into your web browser.)
The New York Public Library Online Catalog was also useful, along with the Juilliard School’s Juilcat online catalog. The Indiana University statewide online catalog is also surprisingly useful for Latin American works, too.
An online library resource is the International Music Score Library Project, which offers free digitized scores and parts to many works, including some trio d’anches. It also offers some historical info on selected composers and info about first editions. (It’s holding of woodwind quintets is much more extensive than that of trio d’anches, however.)
Online national music library resources, websites, and lots and lots of Google searches were also used.
Part of the manner in which I’ve researched this page is looking for trios, quartets and quintets as I go through the entirety of Brandt’s Quintet Page with an eye towards cross-checking Grove’s Music Online, WorldCat, Wikipedia and Google. Many of the works here have come from that research. So far, a couple of years into this procedure, I’ve managed to get from A-O alphabetically (as of January, 2023). I expect the rest of this project to continue through 2024. As a result of that research, I’ve also found trios d’anches that don’t fit the oboe-clarinet-bassoon mold. Two combos that are more common than I thought are 2 oboes and English horn and 2 oboes and bassoon. If you wish to look further into this specialized repertory field, I recommend downloading Melissa Sassaman’s dissertation PDF “Oboe Trios: An Annotated Bibliography” which lists original trios for 2 oboes and English horn by nearly 100 composers.
