Jadassohn, Salomon (1831-1902)

Serenade für Bläser, Op. 104 for double woodwind quintet

Amsterdam: Edition Compusic, 1990

Movements: Allegro di marcia; Andante non troppo sostenuto; Scherzo – Allegretto; Tempo di Bolero.
An original printing, under the enigmatic Opus 104c, was made in 1890 in Boston by A. P. Schmidt. Some libraries are likely to still hold this edition, but it’s not listed in the WorldCat.org. (See Catherine Gerhart’s Annotated Bibliography of Double Wind Quintet Music.)

According to the preface by Jan Joris Nieuwenhuis “this piece has charming melodies and daring instrumentation with a natural feeling for wind instruments. The final movement, the bolera, is particularly noteworthy.” Jadassohn was a composition teacher at the Leipzip Conservatory for many years. His many students included Edvard Grieg, Frederick Delius and Ferruccio Busoni.

Jager, Robert E. (1939- )

Mumblety-Peg (Children’s Games) (1994)

Cleveland: Ludwig Music 1995

Kalmus

From liner notes from the Cumberland Quintet’s recording: “Each movement is a musical description relating to everyday children’s games. Fresh sounding as well as intellectual, they employ many different compositional techniques such as minimalism, an actual ‘tag,’ and a Scottish snap. The last movement, ‘Musical Chairs,’ provides theatrical possibilities as the players leave the stage one by one. Finally, the bassoonist is left alone to play a ‘victory’ cadenza. The other players sneak up and startle him out of his musings with the final chord.” See also: http://rjager.com/

Artia / Barenreiter

Composed in 1924, Janáček wrote Mladi for his 70th birthday. It was premiered in Brno on October 21 by faculty of the Brno Conservatory. It’s an attractive, virtuosic sounding work, fun for players and audience. Recommended. [ Andrew Brandt ]

Tambourine part,ad lib. Movements: Sarabumbals; Martinu dancis (Mummers’ dance); Gaismina ausa (The dawn); Garais dancis (The long dance); Kazu dancis (Wedding dance). Duration: 10:00. See a biography: https://www.musicabaltica.com/en/composers-and-authors/andrejs-jansons/ and https://prabook.com/web/andrejs.jansons/382450

Davyd Breeskin shares that “‘Lettish’ (which invites awful puns about salads) is equivalent to ‘Latvian’. …Hornist must be comfortable with bass clef (sounding a 5th lower). Not otherwise difficult except for the (lengthy) finale, in 5/8 time. The tambourine appears only in the 2nd and 5th movements, in the 2nd movement, the oboist is to play it, but in the 5th movement, a separate player is (apparently) required.”

Quintet, Op. 34 (1928)

New York: Independent Music Publishers, 1961?

Hudebni Informacni Stredisko http://www.musicbase.cz/

Duration: 18:00. In 1928, Jirák was awarded the Czech State Prize for this work and his Second String Quartet. The Wind Quintet was premiered on November 8, 1929, in Prague by the Prague Wind Quintet (Rudolf Hertl, flute; Václav Smetáček, oboe; Vladimír Říha, clarinet; Otakar Procházka, horn; and František Matějka, bassoon. WorldCat only lists one library holding of this work in the music library of Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. As a teacher at the Prague Conservatory and principal conductor of the Czechoslovak Radio Orchestra during the 1920s, it is possible the Wind Quintet was written for a radio broadcast by members of the radio orchestra. In 1947 he accepted the invitation to teach music theory and composition at Roosevelt College in Chicago (from 1948 to 1967) and with the Conservatory college in Chicago. Today, the only WorldCat affiliated library to have a copy of the New York publication is in the music library of Northwestern University. Most English-language biographies of Jirák are fairly brief, but there is a much more substantial biography of his life available online in Czech. (Google Translate does a fairly creditable job in translating it.)

No date of composition or of a publisher is given. The Quintet No. 2 is for strings.

Variations, Scherzo and Finale for Nonet op. 45a, (1943)

Although it appears to be unpublished, oddly it appears to have been premiered on Feb. 16, 1969, in Birmingham, Alabama. I cannot confirm the instrumentation.

Serenade for Wind Instruments, Op. 47 (1944)

Likely unpublished. It was premiered on February 15, 1945, in Prague by members of the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Alois Klíma. After World War II, the communist Czechoslovak government banned any performances of Jirák’s music and confiscated his property and his musical and literary income. Whether this and other pre-war works were also confiscated and/or destroyed is unknown, but could be a good investigative project for an enterprizing Czech musicologist.

Quintett in B, Op. 84 (1928)

Berlin: Richard Birnbach, 1930

Duration: 25:00.

Paul Juon was born in Moscow in 1872, to parents of Swiss and German background. He studied violin (Hřímaly) and composition (Arensky and Tanayev) in the Imperial Academuy. He also studied flute for a while. A younger classmate, Sergei Rachmaninov, dubbed Juon the “Russian Brahms.” Juon then went to Berlin to study at the Hochschule für Musik with Woldemar Bargiel, a colleague of (the real) Brahms and half-brother to Clara Schumann. He appears to have spent most of his professional career in Germany, but due to illness he retired to Switzerland and died there in 1934. A recording of the work, dating from the 1970s?, (including the editor of this list on bassoon) is currently available at on YouTube, https://youtu.be/-6JrKNZm66o .
