100+ More Woodwind Quintets

New Additions to Brandt’s Woodwind Quintet Site

Includes Newly Published Works

When searching the web for new (or previously unlisted) woodwind quintets, you end up following informational threads that take you into unexpected places. In the past few days I discovered several works from Cayambis Music Press, a new (to me) publisher specializing in Latin American music, but based in Blacksburg, Virginia. This was followed by visits to the online catalogs for New Music USA, Juilcat (the online catalog for The Juilliard School), the OCLC WorldCat catalog, and Indiana University’s IUCat catalog.

Then a visit to the Dorian Wind Quintet’s website led to their long list of premieres, which included many twentieth-century works that, apparently, were never published. This led to various other composer websites and also the Imani Winds website, which featured several newer, urban-style quintets.

So, here are a set of new additions to the Quintet List (not necessarily new pieces, but many are). There are some exciting and / or intriguing works here – plenty for the quintet looking for some new repertoire. They join the over 9000 quintets and “quintet-friendly” works and arrangements already listed. The actual quintet pages need to be proofed and updated, one-by-one, so it might take a little while to incorporate all of these into the quintet list. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this update!

P.S. The incorporation of all 103 works into the list was completed on 8/27/2016. Feel free to browse the entire quintet list.

Coleman, Valerie (1970- )

Red Clay and Mississippi Delta (2009)

Subtitled, “Scherzo for wind quintet”. Duration: 5:25. See the Imani Winds’ video of a live performance with the composer on flute.

For those not familiar with U.S. geography, the title is a reference to the Southern Mississippi River region (parts of Tennessee, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi), the deepest of the Deep South and the heart of the Blues tradition. The work features impressive solos for clarinet and bassoon and will have players snapping their fingers (they’re supposed to). [Andrew Brandt]

“speech, and canzone” (2002) for woodwind quintet and mp4

Duration: 12:00. .

Suite: Portraits of Josephine (2006)

Concerto for Wind Quintet

Although titled a concerto, it’s for woodwind quintet alone, but features each of the instruments virtuosically. Duration: 15:35. Recorded by the Imani Winds, listen on YouTube: Afro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkqD2YLpjtY . Danza https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4gMX9lja68 . Vocalise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TffcNbq_FgI . Contact the composer on her site or the Imani Winds website, to see if the parts are available for sale.

Listening to the online versions on YouTube (and not on the Imani Winds album, the classical underground), it’s unclear of the exact order of the movements. But Afro and Danza definitely should be the high energy outer movements and the Vocalise the inner, more contemplative movement. And when I say “high energy”, I’m talkin’ launching a rocket into deep space explosive energy. Listen and decide for yourself. Recommended for the hip, professional quintet. [Andrew Brandt]

Tzigane (2011)

D’Rivera, Paquito (1948-)

Kites over Havana

Written as a remembrance by Paquito D’Rivera of flying kites over Havana, there appear to be different versions of this work. A WNYC Soundcheck video, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRoFyWXK6vI , shows the Imani Winds playing the work, as a normal woodwind quintet, in the radio studio. However, the Imani Winds’ recording is billed as being performed with D’Rivera on clarinet and Alex Brown on piano. (If you search YouTube, you will also find a version for piano and sax quartet.) No word on whether or when the work will be published for quintet.

Echave, Federico

Ten Pieces for flute, alto flute, oboe, clarinet and bassoon (2004)

Cayambis Music Press, 2016 (www.cayambismusicpress.com/)

Duration: 9:00.

“This work is based on the use of five notes, D, E, F, A and B, that are distributed amongst the five instruments. As the work develops ever more larger leaps are used as well as increasing chromaticism. In addition, the composer integrates displaced loops and extended techniques, such as aeolian sound, singing while playing, key slaps and breathing noises.”

Holloway-Nahum, Aaron (1983- )

How to Avoid Huge Ships (2013) for flute, clarinet, English horn, bassoon and horn

Chipping Norton: Composers Edition, 2016?

A video introduction to the work and a full online score, plus a recording are available on the composer’s website. Premiered by the Atea Quintet as part of the second New Dots concert.

Although the composer doesn’t state it, the title comes from a real textbook for mariners. The book’s appearance on Amazon.com, however, led to a series of hilarious mock reviews which became a web legend. The quintet composition, from a quick listening, appears to be quite serious, though, and a very attractive if difficult work. Appropriate for a professional-level quintet. [Andrew Brandt]

The Dialect of Lunatic Hurricanes (2014)

For alto flute doubling piccolo, English horn, bass clarinet, horn and bassoon. Commissioned by the Britten Sinfonia for their Opus2014 Competition.

The title appears to be based on a poem, “Dialect of Hurricanes”. A translation is available on the Poetry Translation Centre. It seems the composer enjoys obscure literary references in his titles. [Andrew Brandt]

According to the composer, “The first movement, As one, is a textural study that explores the different capabilities of the wind quintet. The second movement is a homage to the Icelandic composer Þorkell Sigurbjörnsson, which had recently passed away when the piece was being written. It is built on one of Þorkell’s (or Thorkell’s) most famous compositions, a hymn called ‘Heyr himna smiõ.’” (Thorkell Sigurbjörnsson also wrote several quintets included in this list.)

Commissioned by The Band of the US Army Reserve. See an excerpt on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WoJfBL0u0KY .Contact the composer on his website, http://www.musicbyjeffscott.com/ .

From the YouTube excerpt, this work has the feel of a Latin Big Band more than the usual concerto of quintet and band. Not to every woodwind quintet’s taste, but I imagine it would definitely be a crowd-pleaser at a band concert if the ensemble and director were experienced in Latin music. [Andrew Brandt]
